Baldyboy 1 Posted February 1, 2012 tonight he was awful, he looked so out of his depth, think he needs a rest and Naughton needs to go back to Right Back. dont get me wrong he has had a good season but not at Right Back!!!
he 0 Posted February 1, 2012 Russell Martin and Daniel Ayala would have been a good partnership in the centre back. With Kyle Naughton at right back and Tierney or Drury at left back. Think Ayala is a good prospect. He is still young but hope he can be a very good centre back for the future if he tighten up. Not right there yet, but with games under his belt he has a lot of potential.
Gingerpele 0 Posted February 1, 2012 I thought he dealt with that winger fairly well considering.... But still he probably needs a rest.

Just look at the game tonight, of the 4 defenders, those 2 were weaker than Whitbread and Naughton. Defensively Whitbread is a much better centreback than either of Ayala or Martin
spencer 1970 214 Posted February 2, 2012 my quote on another thread yesterday re R.Martin...I think he has been our weakest defender in the last 4/6 weeks and needs a rest. I''ll never become a player-basher especially to RM as he has been a legend for us but thought he was awful in the league games against Spurs, QPR, West Brom and West Brom again in the cup. Bring Naughton back to the right and let him sit it out for a bit. It didn''t do Bennett, Holt, Fox, Pilks, etc any harm.
Jacko 0 Posted February 2, 2012 I don''t think he was any worse than anyone else in the team yesterday. If we are being very harsh, 2 of the goals were as a result of being sliced apart on the left flank which isn''t his fault. If Tierney is ready and has done well in training then he needs to come back in because I am a firm believer that you need someone left footed playing at left back and if Martin loses his place he can have no complaints. But singling him out is very harsh.

[/quote]I''m not saying they were all his fault but he didn''t compete strongly enough with McLean in the build up to the 1st and then failed to pick up Sessegnon for the 2nd. Jacko 0 Posted February 2, 2012 I personally thought Jonno had to hold his hands up for the second one. Sessegnon went past him and laid the ball off. Jonno rather half heartedly tracked him and before we you knew it was in the back of the net. The first goal was just an absolute worldie. I am not going to attach any blame to anyone for that. It's Character Forming 1,204 Posted February 2, 2012 McLean is a top winger. I thought it took 5-10 mins at the start for RM to get to grips with him, but after that he did a good job of keeping him pretty subdued for the rest of the game. Don''t think any of our other fullbacks would have done any better.

But that doesn''t excuse Martin failing to deal with Sessesgnon when he arrived in the box and had an unchallenged header at goal. Campbell''s goal was a brilliant strike but I would still say we were too soft in the build up to it, McLean held Martin off without too much hassle, Martin didn''t do enough to win the ball. Canary_on_the Trent 0 Posted February 2, 2012 Its fair to say he has really struggled at right back this season. In the past also, he has really struggled in 1 on 1 situations with lively wingers. In the Championship it wasn''t so much of a problem as we didn''t give up possession like we have this season & allowed wingers to get at him.He did well at centre back but if you look at the games he played, he had a tendency to play too deep, although it enabled him to make regular goal-line clearances, it invited pressure onto the side & gave the midfield too much to do.As well as he has done over the last 2.5 years, at this level he is a squad player for me providing decent cover for right back & centre back.Naughton has to play at right back with a naturally left-sided player at left back. AJ 1,358 Posted February 2, 2012 The problem is he simply isn''t quick enough against some of the best wingers in the world. Naughton and Tierney will be our full backs when fit. Hopefully that''ll be soon too!
