Squad depth

Recommended Posts

A few questions have been put on here in terms of squad size/depth. This combined led me to Lambert''s comment on only bringing in better than what we have or someone that offers something different.

If you take into consideration all of the players that did not start against Bolton including the injuries you could still put out a competetive side in my opinion.

GK: Rudd or Steer

RB: R. Martin

CB: Barnett, Ward and in a month R.Bennett.

LB: Tierney

RM: Bennett

CM: Howson, Johnson and Crofts

LM: Lappin

STR: Morrison, Vaughan, Wilbraham

Most of those players have been in the team for a stint this season and proven they are able. Yes, they may not be big name players that dazzle the premier league but so far they have all had a part to play.

I think we have a rock solid base to a team. It could come down to identifying the right players in the summer to add to that in terms of right attitude but a step up in quality.

Well proud that when Lambert says team or lads he is not refering to a select few but an entire squad of hard working lads.

The way Lambert sets up his team/squad, means even players like Lappin, Wilbraham, Ward have a part to play, and when called upon can do a job (as the previous two have shown) to the standard required, despite not really being anywhere near premiership quality.

I think Lambert would be quite happy if he had to play a team out of the players you listed, we''ve got strong options in defence (and if Rudd and Steer''s appearances are anything to go by, in goal as well) various options in midfield that allow for various tactics and styles, and also some decent options up front.

This is a squad that Lambert is building for the future, off the top of my head, the only players over the age of 27 are Holt, Morison, Wilbraham, Lappin, Crofts?, Ward, Hoolahan, Drury and maybe Whitbread. With only a couple of them over 30. We have a very young squad, and not young as in a few youngsters who might make the odd sub appearance like at Chelsea, but players between 21-26 who are still perfecting their game (although I suppose even Hoolahan and Holt are still perfecting their game) and with years left to play together, a very strong squad can be built, with only one or two additions needed each year.

Lambert, in my opinion is running this club better (or at least as well as) anyone else could do on the budget he''s on. Maybe we do have a coupe of ''star'' players in Hoolahan, Holt and Moro, but Hoolahan doesn''t play well if say Fox and Surman aren''t playing well (or Fox not playing), Holt and Morison need decent service to get goals, they don''t very often make something out of nothing, we really do rely on having a good squad, a good selection of players, with a variety of tactics. And for the most part its working very well.

very happy with the player situation at carrow road. have confidence that all the players you named are able to hold their own in this league, they may not set it alight but nor will they be damp squibs. do we have to name our new squad of 25 about now, or has it already been done. seen no mention of it anywhere.

Good points.  It did strike me at the weekend when we lost both CBs and still won comfortably with a clean sheet, how well it compared to the pitiful bleating from the Newcastle manager when they had a couple of CB injuries after having an unchanged back 4 for ages at the start of the season.

Another point is that other teams can''t identify one or two players to focus on, e.g. Pilks or Hoolahan have looked key for us at some points of the season but have then been left out of the starting team.

Ward only just turned 27 and as of yet we havnt seen him in action in the prem. I dont see why people right him off so quickly. Him and Whitbread were easily the best two all round cb''s last season.

Barnet is good too but not as good as Ward with the ball at his feet.

With possible injuries to Whitbread and Ayala one of Ward and or Barnet could come back in. Probably alongside Martin and perhaps the other on the bench.
