NWC 335 Posted January 29, 2012 Following the MOM performance of Jed Steer, he has proved that he will make a formidable deputy for big JR.So where does that leave the existing deputy Declan Rudd? Is he now surplus to requirements? Should we sell Declan and effectively cash in on a player who himself is no mug between the sticks.Or do some people feel that it is only one match, and that young Mr Steer still needs a bit more experience before he officially becomes JR''s number 2.I guess my opinion would be that PL says, "how do you know that they are not good enough for the premier league unless you give them a chance" - with this philosophy he has bought in players from lower leagues, and made them premier league regulars.Premier league teams often have 3 keepers, but they are normally their number 1, a young guy, and an old guy happy to sit on the bench and give a bit of experience. We have 3 relatively young keepers all wanting to play football, so keeping them all happy could prove difficult.

pete 375 Posted January 29, 2012 JR is 25, DR 19/20, JS 18/19 at club going places why would any of them want to move, loan obviously when DR fit but will it be DR or JS.Remember Joe Lewis a superstar, not have you seen his mistakes again yesterday he has become a liability rather than a protege. Gingerpele 0 Posted January 29, 2012 We are allowed three GKs at the club, in fact its probably a good idea to have three GKs. Rudd and Steer are both still very young, neither of them will be leaving (permanently at least) for a while, if ever.
Jacko 0 Posted January 29, 2012 It isn''t the end for either of them. While Jed Steer is undoubtedly a fantastic prospect, it was just one match. So I wouldn''t go overboard just yet. That would be unrealistic and unfair on both him and Declan Rudd. They are both still young and learning the game. I think at the moment there is still scope to have one out on loan somewhere and have the other one covering/challenging John Ruddy for the number 1 slot. There shouldn''t be any shortage of takers for either. In around 3 or 4 years time will all of Ruddy, Rudd and Steer be at the club? Probably not, I would suggest. They are 3 quality keepers who deserve to be playing first team football by that age. But that conversation is for much later down the line.
Yellow Wal 316 Posted January 29, 2012 But perhaps this will make all the people who thought it foolish to cash in on Joe Lewis sit up and take note.Lewis was sold because of the immense promise of Rudd and Steer............. surely the official site listing Jed Steer at 6ft 0ins is wrong? I see he is listed as 6ft 3ins in other places and he always seemed taller than Declan Rudd to me. Which is it?And can we now PLEASE forget about Fraser Forster! Davo 0 Posted January 29, 2012 I noted yesterday that young Jed was only an inch or two taller than Drury and he''s 5''11 according to the main site.Davo

Clint 221 Posted January 29, 2012 Jed is apparently the better prospect though and I think Lambo''s show of faith probably illustrates that.In response to the original question, I''m not sure how it will pan out but we don''t need two extremely good keepers when our no 1 is only 25. Rudd could be a no 1 in his own right and we could cash in so yes, I expect it is.
Clint 221 Posted January 29, 2012 That should say ''two extremely good YOUNG keepers'' doh!
Yellowbeagle 0 Posted January 29, 2012 I dont see why one of Steer or Rudd couldnt go out on a season long loan next year, or even better swap and take a 3 month loan each next season (i wouldnt have been surprised if Rudd had his turn on loan for some first team games if he hadnt been injured), I dont see any need to push him out of the door yet, especially after Steer has had one fiirst team game, although admittedly a really good one. Besides having three keepers while in the premier league all capable of stepping up has to be good.
yellow_wade 0 Posted January 29, 2012 Of course this is not the end for Rudd. Steer was immense yesterday, but lets not forget Rudd stepped up to the plate in the West Brom game after Ruddy''s suspension.Yes we lost that game, buts it''s still early to tell. As soon as we can afford to I think we send out Steer or Rudd on loan to teams like Barnsley etc???
Fuquan 0 Posted January 29, 2012 Not yet, but isn''t the youth team keeper - remi matthews- meant to be pretty good too. Some production line. Keep them all on their toes I guess
Canary_on_the Trent 0 Posted January 29, 2012 Its not an issue for a while yet, we need 3 decent keepers and we have 3. At the start of next season 1 of Rudd/Steer will go out on loan, I suspect Rudd to begin with as he is 21 now & could do with some games.Hopefully people will stop whining about the sale of Joe Lewis now, it was clearly said at the time that we received decent money & had 2 potentially ''better'' prospects coming through. TIL 1010 5,304 Posted January 29, 2012 I am surprised the John Ruddy bashers and let''s face it there were plenty of them on here not so long back have not popped up and suggested we cash in on him as Rudd and Steer seem to be adequate replacements.Oh no hang on they suggested we needed to buy experience and it was a big failing of Lamberts not to see a goalkeeping crisis at the club looming large on the horizon.[:P]
drurys testamonials V 15 0 Posted January 29, 2012 Of course not.We have a great choice now and even more when Rudd is fit again. What a position to be in.An ideal opportunity to blood Steer in case the worst happens. Will give John Ruddy the spur he needs to make sure he keeps No 1 shirt after he has stepped up to the plate this season.. Have always backed him despite being concerned over some of his mistakes as he wears the shirt.
andyc24_uk 79 Posted January 29, 2012 Long-term I think we need to hang on to both of them. Ruddy has really developed this season and is a much stronger ''keeper than he was back in August/September - however I think it''s fair to say he''s currently playing at about 100% of his potential/ability - e''s been playing some blinders which is awesome, but I''m not sure he''s going to get much better than he is now. Hopefully he can keep it up next season. Rudd is still developing and also getting better every game - I''d say he has the potential to be a better ''keeper than Ruddy if he gets the games to help him - Hopefully he''ll go out on a full-season loan next year to a Championship club where he''ll be first choice - He really needs 40-odd games at a decent level (not league 1/2) to fully realise his potential. I suspect when he came back, he would then be seriously challenging Ruddy for the no.1 jersey.Steer is probably going to be better than either of them in the long run. Hopefully he can spend next season as backup to Ruddy while Declan is on loan; then go out for a year himself in 2013/14. By the 2014/15 season, we should have an experienced Rudd as no.1, with Steer pushing him hard on the bench; and we can then look at cashing in on Ruddy, who will by that point most likely be the weakest of the three ''keepers (but still good enough to play for a Prem or Championship club), leaving us with two talented, experienced young goalkeepers who are both under 25 and pretty much interchangeable depending on form and fitness, and a 20-year-old Remi Martin ready to loan out and keep the conveyor belt going! At least, that''s how I hope it pans out! :-)
grantroederdisaster 0 Posted January 29, 2012 No! We need 3 keepers and Rudd should go on loan to a Championship/League 1 club like Steer did at Yeovil earlier this season!

The club has always produced good young goalkeepers and the future of that position is in safe hands. Let us not forget that more people were saying that our young keepers were not ready than ever pointed out the numerous mistakes our number one has made.
