You have £5million to spend

Recommended Posts

Do you....

A) Spend £5million on Jordon Rhodes

B) Spend £5million on Scott Parker (a player of his nature)

C) Spend £2.5million on two players

D) Spend £2,5million on one new player, make Naughton permanent and one more loan signing

E) Keep the money in the bank

It would be option D for me, try and get Snodgrass in for 2-3 mil and then tie up the Naughton deal (should be less than 2.5 as his contract is up!) and then a loan move for may a centre back or a striker... maybe not a centre back with Ayala looking as good as a new signing!

I can''t see us being prepared to spend £5 million on Rhodes. Don''t get me wrong the goal record is absolutely unreal (I think its 27 in 27 at international/club level now), but that is still an eye watering amount for a league 1 player. I would be happy to pay around £3.5 million but no higher. I doubt Huddersfield would sell for that to be honest. They have a good chairman up there called Dean Hoyle who gives his managers strong backing.

I would prefer it if we could get Naughton in on a permanent deal. I think he is really starting to find his feet now. Anything else would be a bonus. Lambert I am sure will pull a few out of the hat, you didnt see coming.

I got a feeling it will be like it''s always been under Lambert.  He''ll get hungry players from the lower leagues who arnt going to break the bank, it might dissapoint some people but it''s worked so far.  If it aint broke....... [:)]

West Ham had a £3million bid rejected. The realistic amount that Huddersfield would sell for is around £4-5million from most quarters.

I''d start Lappin in the next game again and put the £5million on him as first goal scorer. Just think, if it came off, we would be richer than Man City! Happy days.

Probably D. Get Naughton in and get a tough tackling midfielder in.

I wouldn''t be upset if that''s all we did - Ayala looked decent, and we''ve scored goals all season. I would agree that, long term, we could do with bolstering the defence, and bringing in another striker or two.

However, the way I see it, we can either try to bring in all those players at once, and spend less on each. Or, given that we aren''t in dire straits and are doing pretty well anyway, we can bring in only one or two players in January and spend more on them, and then spend more on the other one or two over the summer as well. I don''t think we need drastic changes in January, so might as well spend wisely on one or two players who can really improve the squad long term, not just give us extra depth for a few months.

I would go for D. I don''t know how much Naughton will cost - his price will have gone up during his time at Norwich. I would certainly pay £2.5m for him, or even £3m - I suspect that ''arry may ask more, however.

Unless PL feels that Martin will come back with enhanced ability, I think that we need a striker. Vaughan has to be doubtful, given his injury record. Wilbraham and Johnson are probably not up to it. So we may have only three to choose from, and if one or two were injured.....    I think that Pilks could operate in the centre, but he is far more effective coming in from wide. Ideally, I would like Rhodes but I think that we could be outpriced here.

The central midfield may need strengthening, but perhaps Korey or Adeyemi could fill in if we become short, or even Lappin/Surman. In the longer run we need a more forceful/dominant  player there. Fullback cover is thin, but we could make adjustments or experiments here.

If we survive the season, we shall certainly have to spend some real money in the summer.

It depends on which players are available and for what price. There are so many factors affecting the price of a player; age, contract status, club finances etc.

I''d look at bringing in 2/3 personally, to freshen it up. No matter how well we''re doing, we''ve got to look to strengthen and carry on improving.

I think the main issue that most are missing is the cost of a players wages. We could sign numerous high profile players, but the wage that these players would command makes it completely prohibitive. I am sure that there is a wage structure in place, and that Mr Mac would not see the club finances put in jeapody by barton-esque signings on 80k per week (which equates to over 4 million per year!). £5 million worth of players could end up costing the club £5 million per year extra wages - I hope that that this would not happen. My opinion, for what it''s worth, is that the liklihood would be more signings of the same; either lower league players or fringe players from bigger clubs keen to play premier league football. We would all like to see big stars playing for our club, but until we are an established premier league team with solid finances and a bigger stadium, I can''t see it happening.

There''s a very good hungry striker claiming he''ll be moving on in Belgium. His name is Jelle Vossen and he plays for Genk and the national team. He really knows where the net is! I work in Brussels part of the time and apparently he''s willing to go...

Play him upfront and tell all the team that anyone who scores (other than the king of Spain) will immediately be transferred to the binners and will have to spend the rest of the season picking the ball of the net in front of 20,000 empty seats at portaloo road! I give it two games max and we will be sitting on £100m plus!

Maybe not this window, but very probably next.

Thats all well & good but it hasn''t worked for Carroll at Liverpool....they''ve all been threatened with a toffee transfer, so have been trying to set him up for the last few games & he still can''t find the back of the net!!!!!!

I think I''d spend it all getting rid of Mcnally and Lambert and pay compensation to Ipswich for Jewell and Clegg!

I long for the days when we struggle again, you don''t have to buy your ticket in advance, no atmosphere at a half empty ground means you don''t have to make much effort chanting yourself, no queues for pies at half time ditto for toilets, can move seats if someones making too much noise nearby, also getting great players in on loan who are probably past it but can show fleeting glimpses of what they used to..................................

I could go on.

As for reality I''d settle for Kyle Naughton permanently, I wouldn''t go above 3.5 million for Rhodes.

Sir Humphrey and Alysha are on to something there.

Would it actually be illegal to stick a whole load of money on Lapps scoring first and to then play him up front and tell the whole team to concentrate on putting it on a plate for him?!?!

[/quote]Got that right. Against Man City I''ve never seen a team try to repeatedly find one player with all manner of passes, crosses and through balls without him managing to do anything with any of them.
