Houston Canary 0 Posted August 14, 2011 Can anyone fill me in on what a Latic is other than the Wigan team. Why are they called the Latics? Is it short for lunatics? Ok, not likely but some of the team nicknames leave me wondering. Thanks ahead of time for any and all help.
Gerry Harrison 2 Posted August 14, 2011 It comes from the name Athletic in Wigan Athlectic. Oldham Athletic are also know as The Lactics.

Houston Canary 0 Posted August 14, 2011 Hah! That''s awesome. 2 different explanations but both very plausible. I love that. Good to know for when it will inevitably come up talking Prem footy this season. A couple of years back I asked where the term "nutmeg" came from and got 3 good answers. My friends were impressed by all of them, as I was. Thanks for your input!
Farkes The Herald Angels 0 Posted August 14, 2011 This came from an Oldham message board"For the uninitiated and contrary to some visitor''s suggestions a LATIC is nothing to do with milk, antacid or laxatives. Nor is it a milky substance from plants and it is not contagious . There is NO such thing as a Latic. The ''Latics'' is an abbreviation of Oldham Athletic AFC"
Canarino 0 Posted August 14, 2011 The noisy corner of their crowd yesterday had a big banner which said "We come from Wigan, we live in mud huts". I have no idea why.
