The Pink Un

Did any body buy The Pink Un when it was Newspaper form, used to buy it odd occasions on Sat evening

[/quote]

I did and there were always queues at every newsagent waiting for the van that deliverd it. Big queues. It was the convention to have the exact money so as to not hold  things up as dozens were dispensed to eager readers in no time.

The Pink was extremely big in those days and the highlight of many people''s saturday night, along with Morecambe and Wise, that is. Oh and Match of the Day, of course. No srtupid Hansens or that miserable so-and-so, in those days. In fact, very little analysis at all, just a couple of interviews and a bit of general comment.

Pre-internet, it was the same everywhere. When I was at Uni. there were always dozens of us, from all parts of the country, waiting by the postal delivery area every tuesday morning because our good old dads had posted the respective paper on. They came in various colours too.

As a kid I would pop into the newsagents and pick up a copy on a Saturday evening along with a pack of football stickers of course.

However the internet and tv coverage such as Soccer Saturday on Sky has killed it off. Why walk down to the shop and pay for a paper when match reports, interviews etc are readily available online by 5pm.

I did, and always used to go down the newsagents in St Giles Road to get a copy.

My elder brothers used to keep back copies, and I remember reading a bleached copy of Norwich beating Man U away in the Cup (must have been about 1967). Bolland and Heath were the scorers, from memory.

Even had it mailed to me when I lived in France for a year in the 80s, though took about 5 days to get there!

The easier it became to get football information through mobile phones and on the internet, the less relevant specialist papers like the Pink Un became and sales dropped off and eventually became unprofitable.

I still have a few old copies saved away from big matches.

And then along came the Internet, I remember standing outside the Paper shop, Can''t spell News agents, I also remember bumping into fellow canary fans and hold debate''s on the game, then getting home to the sound Where the hell you been, those were the days

I use to get mine from Mrs Dales Newsagents on St Johns Close just off Hall Rd and a whole load of us would wait for the van to pull up. We would than nip into the chippy to get the family dinner for Saturday and than go back, have our chips, read the pink''un and head off to the Cricketers pub on Lindley street and discuss the footy over a few Ales....Great days!

" My girlfriend made me chuck them all ".........WTF !!I''ve got 40-odd years worth in the loft. If my other half made me chuck mine out she''d go with them. Man up for God''s sake....( my other half doesn''t read this forum but it''s not like I''m scared of her or anything....)

My Granny used to post me them up to Yorkshire so i could read all the reports of when we were a mediocre Championship Club in the late 90''s. Worth the 40p every time!

She even used to video the odd match that used to be recorded on ITV Anglia at like 3am and send that to me, would love to still have some copies of them!

My Dad ran a village newsagents in mid-Norfolk (Foulsham) in the 60s, I remember the shop being full on a Saturday evening, the Eastern Counties bus would pull up outside and a lad, usually wearing a City scarf , would jump off with a bundle of Pink Uns which were then seized on with great enthusiasm. When we moved to Wymondham I used to walk down to the town to pick one up most Saturdays. Later on, only bought one when we had won convincingly, still got a few of them around to this day.

I love how Wiz has essentially labelled every single journalist as ''scum'', yet runs off crying claims of ''bullying'' whenever anybody says something against him.

So, now we read our football information online by various portable means and we believe ourselves to be better off.

But, there was a genuine romance in the urgency of football correspondent to hot metal, printed copy and delivery around the county. It would make a good article should Archant ever decide to recall it and with it the days when the press was a different entity to what the public has created through demand today.

The community of towns and villages gathered in anticipation at local newsagents to wait for the van and the short sales window. Around that event was a Saturday night moulded.

The paper itself was read in detail by youngsters like myself who tried to picture the goals described at away matches and sought description to match the key moments of home games. In addition, the statistics were poured over and interpreted.

Those were the days of ''Match of the Week'' when match highlights were treasured and away game highlights had the same rarity as a decent Disney cartoon on a bank holiday Disneytime show when all you really got was bloody Herbie films.

They were also the days of the visiting chip van or fish supper collected by bike with the hot food stuffed up your jumper to keep it warm. We ate bucket loads of ''crispy bits'' without thinking about arteries or bmi''s.

Those were the days of Saturday night early entertainment shows and big films before Match of the Day.

Those were the days when you had to go to get things, met up with other people and waited for special moments on television that you had no chance to record, rewind, re-schedule or replay.

They were days when football was watched standing; or in an invalid car on the running track or on a long wooden bench with a cushion as a bought option. The place stunk of cigarettes, bodies were pressed together and sometimes it was hard to see the pitch.

We now enter the 90m Premier League where we will get wall to wall exposure and in depth analysis as deep as the pockets of the subscriber.

Fortunately, we are still a family club in a corner of England that makes us feel a little isolated and unique. We are still trying to punch above our weight and although it was back in Medieval times where wool wealth and North Sea ports made us third in the City pecking order we still carry a sense of superiority over those industrial revolution, johnny come lately towns in the North and see no reason not to put one over them.

Fortunately too, we have a team with players with CV''s that read like a classic FA Cup minnow in terms of former jobs. We can relate to them and we begrudge them nothing. In return they have busted a gut for an inspirational manager and CEO to rescue our Club in the modern mode.

Some visiting supporters and younger fans must wonder about the name of this site but the story behind it is a glorious one and a reminder of our heritage of growing up and living in this great City and County.

Ahhh nostalgia, mine however starts at premier league sticker books (as I am only 24) and me and my brother in law will be collecting this year.  Beings as I lived in Newmarket and couldn''t get radio Norfolk, I also remember sitting watching the teletext roll round with my dad so we could see how Norwich would fare.  No Pink''Un for me I''m afraid!
