Gentleman Jim 0 Posted January 11, 2005 ...listening to radio this morning they were debating rivalry between Portsmouth and Southampton, in view of forthcoming cup tie.One Portsmouth chap reckons that their rivalry began in 1936 when the Portsmouth shipbuilders went on strike, The Southampton workers were a different union called South Coast Union Metalworkers. They went down the coast and did the Portsmouth workers jobs, thereby breaking the strike.Since then Portsmouth people called the Southampton lot SCUMmers. And that''s where the term came from.I am interested in the derivation of words but this don''t ring right to me somehow.Anybody actually know ?
