holt_till_I_die 0 Posted June 12, 2011 You cannot blame Johnson for wanting to play Premier League football and at the very least, double his wages. Lambert has achieved consecutive promotions and is clearly an excellent manager. Despite Norwich''s £20m of debt, he was allowed to spend in excess of £4m in 201011; only QPR spent more. It just goes to show what is achievable with truly committed ownership. Furthermore, Leeds United''s turnover is meaningfully higher than that of Norwich and Leeds is debt free. While we obviously need to strengthen the playing squad, it is of equal importance that we get key players to sign new contracts; Gradel and Schmeichel have only a year left of their current deals. We can only hope they don''t follow Beckford and Johnson (both very saleable assets) in leaving the club for nothing.>>>>>>>>>DID QPR only spend more ? Barnett, Surman and Jackson didn''t come cheap. Vokes, Lansbury and Pacheco loans would have all cost a bit not to mention the other players we signed. A lot of people on this board seem to be under the illusion that we have scraped together a squad on a tiny budget.

jed exodous 0 Posted June 12, 2011 It was on a thread on here a few weeks ago, as said, Surman, Barnett, Fox, Jackson, Tierney, Ruddy, then loans of Lansbury, Pacheco, Vokes...
dylanisabaddog 4,737 Posted June 12, 2011 There was a recent report (can''t remember where I read it) that said we were the 2nd highest spenders in the Championship last season. That was based on total outlay on players, be it transfer fees, loan fees or wages.
shefcanary 2,338 Posted June 12, 2011 I''ve seen this reported in two or three places recently - whilst some on here were bemoaning the fact that we were still regarded as ''lil ole Norwich on this board, Lambert quietly got on with the job being fully supported by the board spending a small fortune in the process. And don''t forget Foulger''s £2 million earmarked for Bennett wasn''t touched either. As Crofts No.1 has said the players we bought last summer were not cheap by anyone''s imagination. Its a big leap now to compete with the big boys but you can quite easily accuse the Board of having gambled last season - and it worked. Just hope people realise on here just what a good job the Board did last year in supporting Lambert.

[/quote]The cash wasn''t earmarked for Bennett, but was the budget for the January transfer window. Norwich brought in Bennett, Wilbraham, Tierney, Lansbury (on his second loan), Pacheco and Vokes using that money. I wouldn''t be surprised if we spent close to £4m, the team that finished the Championship was very different from the one that finished League One.
