30 Years of Club Cabbage

Recommended Posts

Can''t agree more especially as we have an hours journey each way before boarding and after leaving the "luxury" coach.

Eee Lads and lasses, have I ever told you about my journey on the very first Club Canary trip to Rotherham (we took the lead but got stuffed 4-1) on a double decker, and we had 6'' 2" eyes are blue, as our ''host'' for the day.............................................?

What is everybodies problem with the supporters coaches? They take you to away games and bring you back, with a stop half way, they have toilets on board. What is the difference between these coaches and every other coach in the world? What do you expect, a flying coach or one with a swimming pool or cinema in it?!? It''s a coach for crying out loud!

Something I envy, being an exiled fan is the supporters coach. I have to drive to each game, which means a dry run to most matches. and phew, are there occasions when I could do with a drink !

The interiors of the away coaches - actually smell of 30 year old cabbages.....

Can you remember the roundabout where after the game some Rotherham fans were laying on their backs laughing and waving their arms and legs in the air just like those old robots in the Cadburys smash adverts as the coaches made their way home?

And the team coach.....smells of brussel sprouts and sugar-beet.....(I don''t mean coach Culverhouse....I mean the motorised coach)....thingy.

Culverhouse apparently, smells of Heacham lavender......

Been on Cabbage three times in 25 years of supporting Norwich to Sheffield Weds twice and WBA. I did have an incident on the first game of 2010 when I cut it up on the way to Wycombe at a roundabout as I was heading the wrong way. The Cabbage driver was not impressed!

Last time I went on there was around 1999 and two fans behind me had an actual fight. Only on Cabbage!

I think NCFC should draw up a list of any survivors from that first ever '' Club Cabbage '' excursion to Rotherham who are still regular travellers today. One or two likely candidates spring to mind and I think that, they, or any others willing or daft enough to come forward should be rewarded with  free First Class rail travel for themselves and a companion to all our Premiership away games next season.....
Perhaps the leading coach driver should''ve mis-read that roundabout sign and driven straight over it.The Rotherham fans would still have been on their backs waving their arms and legs in the air but maybe not laughing so loudly....

I''ve only done Club Canary once - a trip to the shi thole that was Filbert Street back in 1980 something.

Nothing against it but always had access to a car back in those days.

I think the club coaches are pretty good tbh.  Like someone else said they get you too and from the ground and have toilets, what elso do you want?  I have only had one incident at Coventry a few years back when we arrived 20 minutes into the game but that was more because there was a massive traffic jam rather than it being the clubs fault.

Sometimes they do seem a little unorganised but they are generally pretty good.

Nothing wrong with club canary, I use it for most games each season. Pros....1 Saves a fortune on petrol as well as clocking up too many miles on the car. Mileage for each away game this season would have been just under 8500 miles for me.2 Don''t have to worry about finding somewhere safe to park the car.3 Don''t have to worry about getting lost.4 Can catch up on some sleep on the way. (that''s a bit dodgy to try when driving!)5 Don''t have to worry about driving after having a few beers before the game or at half time.Cons....1 Can''t have a beer on the bus as it''s illegal and the plod could turn the whole bus back if there''s beer onboard. (but then you can''t have a beer if you''re driving anyway)2 Yes there are a few ''skanky freaks'' who use club canary. They''re easy enough to spot though as they are loud, annoying and almost as inbred as our blue friends down the A140. They tend to stick together and all use the same bus all the time. Just avoid them like the plague and you''ll be fine.

Rather not go than go on cabbage. Get there with barely time to spare before the game starts, cant even have a beer, as uncomfortable a journey as you''re ever likely to have.

I tend to use them a lot for the reasons stated by Barclaystand, although trips to closer places, London, 1p5wich etc are usually done on the train.

Oh, and sergio, I made the pub every time I used the coach last season. In fact for Portsmouth we were there in time for the Cardiff v Boro kick off..

Indeed we were Sid. And the normal complaint is that the coaches arrive too early. To my thinking arriving over 2 hours before the game is a good thing because if you encounter two ours of hold ups on route you still make the game.

Anyway, back in the seventies before Big Dunc''s days it was Mascot Coaches. How many remember them?

I''ve got loads of friends who go regularly on the coaches. There are many great fans and good people who use them. Earlier this month I ran a Canary Quiz to raise money for East Anglia''s Childrens Hospices. There were ten teams of fans including four teams from the coaches and a team from Sanders with some of the drivers. The quiz raised £400. Some of the other fans groups I contacted didn''t even bother to reply.

The fans, drivers and coach company all get a big thumbs up from me[Y]

I have been trying to think of the coach company used all those years ago and it has just come to me .........Swaffham Coachways with their No.1 driver i think who was called Margaret. Now she was a big old unit who suffered no nonsense and you certainly would not want to arm wrestle her.

Come on Eye of The Tiger you can join in or don''t you want to admit you are that old?[:P][;)]

I used them many times a few years ago and they have a few pros and cons.Pros: they get you to the game. They have a loo on them, which for someone like me is a godsend!Everyone in your party can have an alcoholic drink when they arrive at the away ground as there is no one driving. often you arrive in good time too. Some coaches have a sweepstake which Me and my friends have won a few times before.. £1 for a possible £50 return pays for the day out if you win.cons: the drivers are idiots! I can only speak from personal experience but having nearly been left behind on the way to west ham, which wasnt my fault, the driver decided he didnt want to let me on, cue big arguement when i was allowed on... The driver taking us to Barnsley when we were playing Bradford! (he had to follow Roger munbys car.. i kid you not!) and leaving 3 of my mates in Ipswich once when we were very young. Also, you always get some young "rapscallions" who think everything they do and say is funny... including racist chants.. abusing fellow passengers and shouting and throwing things.... the "Hosts" on the coach have about as much authority as a lolly pop lady and do nothing about it, when telling them to shut it would make everyones journey more enjoyable.finally, the coach prices are extortionate! splitting fuel costs in a car with 2 or 3 mates works out much cheaper.

That''s probably true but assumes that (a) you''ve got two or three mates to go with and (b) one of you can drive and owns a car.  I have neither (well, I have mates, but you know what I mean) so the coaches are the easiest way for me to get to games.

If Cabbage is your only way and/or cheapest way of getting to a game then I can hack it, although sitting on a sweaty, smelly packed bus breathing in other peoples germs is not my ideal way of travelling anywhere let alone to football!
Yes, I can remember Mascot Coaches - went on my first ever away trip to Leicester in 1969 on a Mascot Coach - got a good kicking as well!  The trip was even more tortuous than it is today without either the Dereham or Swaffham bypasses in place.  At least we got to stop at Swaffham for chips and a beer on the way home (and I was only 14). [:D]

I got banned after 5 trips in the early 90''s for pulling a ''moonie''...... Best thing ever to happen to me getting banned from that circus freak show called cabbage. Yes you do get normal fans on but my god the freaks are about too.... I remember the weird gang who always claimed the back seat....one with long Ginger hair but bald on top and his weird chums.

Would rather cartwheel to away games then that now.
