norfolkchance1 0 Posted May 5, 2011 How does the premier league 25 man squad rule work regarding academy players from our academy that are now in our first team squad such as Chris Martin.
Bethnal Yellow and Green 1,557 Posted May 5, 2011 The squad rules are that we can name a maximum of 25 players over the age of 21, of these 25 at least 8 must have been registered at a club in England or Wales for at least 36 months prior to turning 21 (or the end of the season in which they turn 21). Looking at our present squad there are only 4 players that wouldn''t count as home grown - can you name them all?

norfolkchance1 0 Posted May 5, 2011 Lappin, Holt, Hughes and Hoolahan maybe?
peter2704 0 Posted May 5, 2011 I''d say, Pacheco, S Smith,S Hughes, Lappin and Askou?? Does Hoolahan come under that too? As he only started playing in English football at the age of 23/24?
Canary_on_the Trent 0 Posted May 5, 2011 Rudd, K.Smith, Adeyemi, Francomb, Dawkin, Steer, Ball etc don''t need to be registered as part of the 25 but if we do not have 4 players in our 25 that have come through the club, say just 3, then a gap has to be left in the 25 so only 24 players can be named.Taking away the loanees and under 21s, we have 24 players senior players but only Chris Martin to have come through the system so only 22 could be named with the youngsters on top. Canary_on_the Trent 0 Posted May 5, 2011 My mistake, I thought 4 players had to have come through the club but looking at the rules that isnt the case.
Bethnal Yellow and Green 1,557 Posted May 5, 2011 I think you guys got the non-home grown players pretty much rightl; it''s Hughes, Hoolahan, Lappin and Askou. Pacheco is under 21 so doesn''t count. I thought people might say that Jackson or Whitbread were overseas players due to their Nationalities, but both were playing football in England well before they were 21. Basically, the squad rules will have absolutely no problem for us, unless Lambert goes out and buys about 15 overseas players (which I very much doubt as he hasn''t brought in one yet). Wacky Waving Inflatable Arm Flailing Tube Man 3,703 Posted May 5, 2011 Last summer, there was a lot of fuss made of this, but no club, even Man City, were affected by it. So we obviously don''t have a problem. The only two high profile players to not make their squads were Jonathan Woodgate at Spurs and Michael Kightly of Wolves, and that was only because their clubs didn''t bother to register them because they were injured and couldn''t play before the registration window re-opened in January.Although the rule states there must be a minimum of eight home grown players in a 25-man, in reality, the way it works is that it is a maximum of 17 overseas players. If you are unable to name eight home grown players, you don''t have to, as long as there is enough free spaces in the squad, so a blank space in the squad is worth a home-grown player. The vast majority of clubs last summer didn''t name anywhere near 25 players, because under-21 players don''t count, and they only had around 20 players over the age of 21, and a lot of those were English-trained. Obviously they didn''t bother registering under-21 players.

The intention is for the quota of "home-grown" players to increase over time though and I wouldn''t be surprised a ruling about "club-grown" players was introduced at some point, but it is seen this ruling would actually affect the smaller clubs more than the bigger ones. For European competitions there is a rule about having players trained at your own club - which is why players 17 years and younger are more valuable than players over 18 but still developing.
