Wingers!!!

Recommended Posts

Am i or am i not correct in saying that the standard of wingers at our club has been very poor since the days of Disco and Ruel.  (NR9 - Hucks does NOT count as he is a striker!)  Eadie was ok - granted, but in general when do we see our wingers attacking the full backs, getting to the byline etc etc. Never.

If it were me, and i sat in the corner infills - i´d want my money back, because there is never any action there except for an occasional corner. "Oh look, another corner - that was worth 30 squid".  Ok, i am being facetious, but my point is that when we had good attacking wingers, we were such a bigger threat every time we went forward.

I would also like to point out, that in order for a winger to try to take on defenders, he will require a modicum of vocal support from the crowd - especially if he does not pass the first time - so if you were one of those last season who moaned at Henderson, Harper or Cooper - shame on you

Can we have Pennant on loan now please!

Huckerby looks a bit like a winger, although he tends try and cut inside rather than crossing from out wide.

I agree that we lack geniune width and I would like to see some dazzling wing play in the future, particularly on the right hand side.

Ruel Fox, now he WAS a winger. Give him a contract I say, I don''t care if he''s 47 years old.

el chorizo you are 100000% spot on!  Pennant would be the first real replacement for Ruel Fox.  When we signed Jonson I hoped he would be the one- The pacey winger who takes players on.  Hopefully he''s getting there but Pennant is the finished package.  Great player

I loved watching Dale Gordon playing, remember the step over? Defenders fell for it every time, not only that he could score too.  For sheer pace, you''d be hard pressed to beat Ruel, also anyone remember Mark Barham?

What about Neil Adams though?  He was never a ''beat four players an whip the ball in from the byline'' kind of player, but boy the man could cross a ball.  He was a great example that you don''t have to beat your man to get a good ball in the box.

I posted the same thing on another thread.

I am completely fed up of this "make do" mentality, when any forward or midfield player can play on the wing.

It''s a specialist position, it needs a special player to do it. Look at the most succesful teams:

Chelsea - Duff and Robben
Arsenal - Ljunberg and Pires
Utd - Ronaldo/Beckham and Giggs

And look at what Routledge is doing at Palace.

Jonson is a striker, it''s plainly obvious. He needs an advanced position, because he can''t beat his man. He is direct, but it ain''t good enough.

All this talk of Dale is making me very nostalgic!!

As much as any other Norwich fan I''d have thought!   No, you''ve got me smudge I haven''t seen Pennant week in week out.  But what I''ve seen from several live games and highlights when he''s been playing for Leeds and Arsenal, Pennant has been a bloody good player.  Takes players on, gets defenders frightened.  He''s a rare bread.  If he were at any other club than Arsenal I''m damn sure he would''ve broken into the England squad.  But it''s hard when your behind the likes of Pires!
