Ricardo's report v Bristol City

Recommended Posts

After another set of wonderful results in the Championship this weekend the way was clear for City to put clear water between us and the chasing pack. How many times before when in a similar position have we failed to rise to the occasion? Ricardo has seen it more than a few times and so it was no wonder that there was an almost visible tension in the atmosphere at CR tonight. However Ricardo was in extremely bouyant mood having been given the lowdown by Snowy the cat. That mystical little moggy had chased a Robin off the patio this morning and was obviously anxious to put my mind at ease.City kicked off before a 24K+ crowd and were soon on the attack at the Barclay End. Jackson had replaced the injured Wheelie and nicely chested the ball into space for Wes to make ground into the area. It looked like the chance had gone begging but when the tackle came in Wes went down and the ref pointed to the spot. There was no messing as Holty slammed in a piledriver past the former England custodian. It settled the nerves and allowed City to be patient in their build up. Bristol did not respond by coming forward but maintained two midfielders sitting on top of the back four which made them very hard to break down. There was little goalmouth action in the opening half hour. A low ball into the box by Martin was almost converted by the inrushing Holt and Jackson and a couple of corners were scrambled away with difficulty. Bristol finally got a shot in but Ruddy turned it away comfortably. As halftime approached Wes and Surman started to get a bit more space and when the whistle blew you could say we were well worth our lead. From the start of the second period City turned up the wick, Jackson should have increased the lead but didn''t get enough on it as he poked a shot past James. The Robins then broke and only a diving save by Ruddy prevented a leveller. Back came the Canaries again and Bristol defenders had to throw themselves in front of goalbound efforts on several occasions. Crofts and Holt both went close but somehow the Robins hung in like a punch drunk boxer. You got the feeling that one more goal and the floodgates would open but unfortunately when it came it was at the wrong end. A breakaway led to Campbell Ryce going clear and setting up Adomah to slip the equaliser past Ruddy. It was devastating after so much City pressure and it led to a ragged 10 minutes before City began to wind it up again.Holt almost nodded in across from Wes and James blocked a Crofts piledriver as the clock ticked remorselessly on. PL now played his ace as Jackson was withdrawn for Lansbury. A couple of astute passes almost opened the Robins defence but with 89 minutes on the clock Ricardo was cursing Snowy for giving him a bum steer. I should have known better. Wes picked out Lansburys run into the box and allthough the ball was bouncing high a neat piece of chest control and a shoulder high volley restored Citys lead. The roof nearly came off the stand as we roared and roared and dreamed of that auto spot.A little bit a keep ball ensued as OTBC rang round the ground. Lansbury finally lost the ball in the corner but as Bristol tried to bring it away he tackled back and the ball fell kindly to an unmarked Surman who made 5 yards before slipping the clincher past James. The Robins had been well and truly put to flight just as that mystical moggy had forecast. It would be silly to pick out individuals because this was a convincing team effort where everyone played their part. Ricardo is now a true believer. We are in the driving seat and we have the experience and skill to see this out all the way to the line. If I''m any judge the Swans will be treading water and the Bluebirds will be well under the rainbow. Ricardo can see only one bird on a top perch come May.
