Salopian 1 Posted January 14, 2011 Last summer we appointed Ewan Chester as chief scout. His main task was to set up a scouting team, (Didn''t we have one before?) but he brought with him a compendious knowledge of players in Scotland and in Europe. It''s a little strange that all the recent signings, with the possible exception of Barnett, seem to have been players from divisions below us who were known ,and possibly signed before, by PL.I hope that Chester is setting up a network in the meantime, which will bear fruit in the near future when we go up into the Premiership. If so, his appointment is one plank in the planning.

Norfolk Mustard 106 Posted January 14, 2011 (Said with a hint of sarcasm): What if Ewan Chester also ''fails to settle''? I can just picture him and Stephen Smith skipping hand-in-hand back to the Borders never to be seen again!I thought Scots were supposed to be emotionally tough? A young lad with a post-natal partner recently relocated miles away from home is pretty much the norm for many a footballer surely? When I was his age I left Norwich to live in the North West with my 8 months + pregnant wife - it was a huge step moving 2 weeks prior to our first baby being born. On pro wages I have little sympathy for him; Smith needs to grow up on an emotional level and realise what he''s got. Given his lack of contribution for Norwich so far no-one on here seems particularly bothered about him leaving though. Hardly surprising that...PS: Marc Tierney looks like he''ll get stuck in, whatever life throws at him. I like him already! :-)
chicken 0 Posted January 14, 2011 That''s more than a little harsh.I would recomend you look into Marcus Treschothic and what he went through to really understand what lies behind home sickness. Some people are just so close to their emediate family they find it nearly impossible to stop thinking about them when away from them.In a way I like it that this sort of thing pops up every now and then. Despite the money, despite the oppertunity, perhaps he knows he can''t give us his best in that state, or that he values his family and life fullfillment more than football. At least it appears to be being dealt with amicably. canaryfan68 0 Posted January 15, 2011 Norfolk Mustard - As it seems to some that its just a case of simple homesickness I understand what you are saying but until you know the full facts it is a little harsh suggesting what you have.I am sure PL would have known Steven Smith prior to bringing him down or known of his character, so sometimes life isn''t black and white as you see it.He looked capable when at Bristol City... Norfolk Mustard 106 Posted January 15, 2011 I don''t think I''m being overly harsh - if you don''t want to be away from home, stay where you are with your folks. It''s a straightforward choice. I do have sympathy for people who make mistakes though; and in this case it appears to be being dealt with fairly well. Smith must expect a curtailed football career as a result mind. Still, as a player PL returned from the Bundesliga to be with his family in Glasgow, so fortunately for Smith I guess he relates as well as anyone. As a regular visitor to Aberdeen I know quite a few Scots in Oil & Gas (including the season ticket holder next to me at CR) and never met anyone unable to settle here in Norfolk or overseas, so I have a rather biased opinion I suppose...Sorry if I offended anyone. Largey 0 Posted January 15, 2011 I''m pretty glad he hasn''t scoured the Scottish leagues - they are comparable with League One and Two anyway!
