Argument about 1959 Norwich v Luton FA cup semi-final replay

Does anyone know why the above match was played at 2.30 on a Wednesday because an argument has broken out between my dad an uncle.

Was it something to do with lack of floodlights so has to be played during the day ?

Don''t think so as we''ve found that st. Andrews (birmingham) where the match was played, had floodlights installed 1956, 3 years before the tie.

But if they were faulty I guess that could be the reason. It''s been nearly 2 hours and they''re still debating it!!!

I work with one of the team from 1959 so will ask him when I see him on Wednesday

I grew up to stories of the 59 cup run, my Dad would probably know the answer but unfortunately he''s not with us any longer.

I couldn''t find an answer on the net but have found another question, why did Norwich object to the first game being played at Chelsea and as a result it was moved to Spurs?

I think in those days it was policy to play FA cup semi final replays on a week day Wednesday afternoon particularly as quite a lot of workers had Wednesday afternoons off. I remember the game (indeed the whole cup run!) well but I''m not sure if the reasons I mentioned about time of the game are correct?

But the replay games at Carrow Road were at night.  Why would the semi final be different?  I think it has to be something to do with the floodlights, but can''t find anything anywhere to prove it.

Good news was that it was games afternoon and we all sat in the hall and listened to it on the radio.

My mum and family are round this afternoon. I asked her about what time the replayed game was and she said it was definitely in the afternoon. She was working at the N&N Hospital, finished later in the afternoon and remembers being told the result at the end of her shift.

Couldn''t find the St Andrews one in the time I had but found the White Hart Lane one which kicked off at 3.30pm (Sat March 14th). Says they restricted the attendance to 66,000 to allow for "ample room for all to see the game in comfort".

A third of the tickets went on sale to Spurs supporters ffs.

Sadly my dad who was a 59''er, and was at St Andrews, died earlier this year or I could have asked him....

My dad who is old enough and went to all the games assures me it was because there were no floodlights at St Andrews. My mum tells me that the 6 oclock national news started withthe words well its all over ( obviously the Norwich cup run ).

as a previous post has stated Brum installed floodlights in 1956, first used them in a freindly against B. Dortmund in 57.

I have a feeling the match was played in the afternoon so that all schools and people at work could listen to the commentry on the radio.

I remember listening to the commentry in our school hall.

I know this thread is a bit old now, so my apologies for dragging it up again. I asked my colleague and GRD your reasons are correct. Apparently it was normal practice in those days.

Slightly off subject - it''s about the early use of floodlights

They were introduced shortly after the second world war, but were rather unreliable and very often the ground would have to bring in a large group of German prisoners to help ....
