Marlon King...would you accept him playing for Norwich?

Recommended Posts

Inspired by a similar question posed on the guardian: would you have Marlon King at your club?

My answer is no.

Unfortunately, although I believe in rehabilitation and second chances, I also see being a professional footballer as a priveleged life and I struggle to see it as a job.  So my judgement is clouded by that and it prevents me from being objective.  Were we talking about a bin man who wanted a second chance on the bin route, I might be more inclined to give him that second chance.

King has been found guilty and served time, yet I believe he is still protesting his innocence and is appealing.

NO

And anyone who answers otherwise needs to take a look at themselves or maybe ask their wives/girlfriends what they think.

He has convictions longer than his arm for beating up women

Nope, personally and from a professional point of view too.I think what a more interesting question would be, is what on earth would happen should Lambert actually go out and sign him, hypothetically? Would we boo him on his debut, only to cheer him after he scores a hat-trick? I, for one, couldn''t do it. As an above poster said, an utter waste of oxygen. Naturally I wouldn''t boycott the club or stop going to games or anything like that, because the club is bigger than any one person and will continue regardless of what happens, even if it does a Wimbledon and has to start from scratch under a new entity. From a professional point of view, there''s no way he''ll be fit enough anyway, and should he get back in the game it''ll take him forever to rediscover his old form, if he ever does.

its the whole footballers set an example debate again, if you want a player that will score goals at championship level, marlon king would do that without a shadow of a doubt.

if he did admin in an office for example, he would more than likely get a job easy enough, but because he should be setting an example his career is under attack.

personally i believe the lad deserves another chance, lee hughes killed somebody and now he is back playing football!

theres a good article on this on the guardian at the moment.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/blog/2010/aug/10/marlon-king-qpr-wigan-fans

I should really learn how to link properly.

For me no, I would not give a penny in any form to the club while they employed that kind of thug (thug doesn''t seem quite strong enough...). Its one thing to have convictions, it''s quite another to be unrepentant about them.

Yes although possibly on a pay per play contract. Give him a trial first see if he has still got it, in terms of ability. Then if he screws up anymore just cancel his contract. A fit Marlon King would be an excellent addition to our squad.

Lee Hughes is acted stupidly, and killed someone. He deserved the sentence he got and served it, but it was in some sense at least an accident and he has apologised and has tried to make up for it (as much as you can in the circumstances anyways).

King has over a dozen convictions dating back to 1997 often for violent attacks. As far as I am aware he didn''t trip and sexually assault that female student by accident or misplace his fist in her face.

There is a big difference between Hughes and King.

point accepted.

i just feel that your never going to stop having people in football who have commited crimes.

at the end of the day, king will sign for a championship club and more than likely play against us this season!

Never,  as even now with a wealth of evidence to support his conviction, he shows no remorse to his victim & has obviously learnt nothing. I''d ban the sex pest from football full stop!

we accepted chris brown who was thrown out of sunderland with a few other players... careful what i say... in a hotel with a video and match of day commentary style as they had their wicked way with her

there are alot of things that go on behind closed doors at clubs with players taking advantage of there position, no other employers would stick with an employee who got into the trouble these guys get themselves into

In america it really is a weird thing, celebrating rehabilitation, basketball stars, american football heros who have done time for very serious crimes

but never agreed with the chris brown signing due to that, well and also he was a limited striker

Football could learn a thing or two from the NFL in the way it tries to keep it''s players honest. To remain on topic with the OP. I would never welcome King to the club. Being a footballer should be a priviledge not a right.

a resounding no! I wouldn''t want anyone convicted of violence or sexual assualt against women, or any racist assualt/abuse playing for our fine club. It just wouldn''t sit easy with me. And if I was an employer I wouldn''t want to employ anyone convicted of the above things either!

What does Chris Brown rattling some tart, with his mates have anything to do with Marlon King??

Marlon King as served the time given to him from the courts, if he worked in a factory, hed be back working in a factory, if he was a plumber, he''d be back plumbing! football is his job, theres no reason why he shouldnt play football again!

He''d score goals all day long at this level.

This reminds me of the time when Carrow Road gave a terrific reception to Matty Pattison after his terrible ordeal of being caught driving over the limit in his underpants to Colney, luckily good fortune smiled on him not to get into any accidents which could have killed someone

Not for me. He is a very good footballer but I would not want to see the progress of three exciting strikers blocked by a man who can extremely disruptive to his teammates. Isn''t he alleged to have headbutted Dean Windass in a casino in Scarborough?

Here''s the problem as I see it. I believe that people deserve second chances. Maybe even third or fourth, but they really have to want to try to change. As many say, he has multiple convictions and shows no sign of remorse for the wrongs he has committed. Then on the flip side of this, it is his job. As long as you state your convictions to your employer, it is up to them as to whether they employ you or not. You can''t stop a person from working as everyone has a right to earn a living. It''s such a grey area because you could then come back that everyone has a right to live their life without being assaulted by people who don''t see fit to follow the laws and common decency of man.Personal feeling is that I would rather not have to deal with it by it never becoming an issue. How''s that for sitting on the fence? Hahaha.

When you bring players in, you bring in their talent and you bring in their problems. Marlon has much of both.
