Worth a punt...

Recommended Posts

Grrrrr, this has to be the most annoying term on this board.  Why do people think that spending money on players in their late 20''s or 30''s are ''worth a punt''?  Buying someone for a fee, then a signing on fee and we like to pay the agents a bit as well, then a 3 year contract.... the punt then becomes a costly signing, also it makes fans sound like they think the club has cash to throw away, willy nilly...

Players who fit the term worth a punt are non league players in the mould of Cody Mcdonald, Charlie Austin, or players who have potential and have proven themselves for 2 or 3 seasons at lower league level like Jackson.  Another example of a good punt is Elliot Ward, free transfer, 2 year deal, prem experience and 3 or 4 years of champ experience, takes penalties so can handle pressure.  The likes of Jon Stead and Marlon Harewood are not worth a punt.

The club appears to be moving away from a trend that was set by Worthy, Grant, Roeder, Gunn of signing players who dont care about the club.  Most of the players who people are suggesting a punt on are journeymen looking for a cushty pay day.  Lambert seems to be signing players with a bit of experience and still at a good age and putting them on shorter contracts of 2 years with a 1 year option.

So in summary, can we keep the ''worth a punt'' shouts to a minimum please?

What are the odds on anyone taking notice of this? Pretty good, I would say. Could be worth a punt!

Good one, shame your using it in the wrong context.  Nothing wrong with people suggesting decent bets, just a shame more people cannot suggest decent realistic players....

[/quote]It is fairly simple business sense really isn''t it? We should sign players that still will have some value at the end of their contract if they have to/need to be sold. In most cases, granted not all, signing a 28-30 year old on an expensive fee/signing on fee/agent fee/wage is a hiding to nothing. Lambert does seem to be bucking the trend of previous managers and signing mid twenty somethings that will have some value in case we want to sell them. Of course the added bonus is that these players are adding something to the current squad in terms of filling a hole or having premiership/championship experience.
