Loss of the Pinkun Live Text Feed

Recommended Posts

Apologies if there is already a thread for this - I''ve had a quick scan and haven''t seen one - but I''ve just seen on Twitter, from Mr Bailey, that ''the authorities'' - by which we can only assume to be the FA or the Football League - have a problem with local papers providing live text updates of games via their websites.  This obviously means that the Pinkun live feed, so beloved of exiles across the world, is unlikely to return next season. If this proves to be the case, its a shocking state of affairs and further evidence of how far out of touch those in charge are with the average football fan.  The feed used to attract thousands of fans, especially for away games, and it will be a massive loss.Perhaps Pete or Michael could shed further light on the matter?I also wonder if there''s anything an average joe could do to make a difference here, or would a petition fall on deaf ears?If so, its a sad day for football fans of all clubs throughout the world...

Completely agree with everything you say EM, would be a huge loss for those exiled fans but we''re working on a compromise - will keep you posted. As soon as an agreement is reached I''ll let you know.

This would affect every fan across the country as we''re one of hundreds of papers that provide this service.

This is indeed sad news for those who cannot get to Carrow Road for whatever reason on a matchday.Last season, I relied on this along with the unofficial match thread and SSN for matches I couldn''t get to.As an exile I couldn''t listen to Radio Snorefolk on line either, thanks to licenecing laws there.
Couldn''t you move to Norwich?
You clearly have not read my most recent blog, posted at the beginning of June lolHowever I posted in support of those who cannot make games for various reasons, which includes exiles.Cheers for that news Pete

You can''t copyright a fact. Despite that.... those fukkers can get fundamental copyright laws changed i.e. fixture lists. A fixture list is a bunch of facts and not something they should ever be able to have copyrighted. It''s idiocy, but then, this is what you get if you listen to Americans.

For me living in Scotland I love the text service. Sure there are similar things provided by the BBC  etc but it doesn''t have the interaction that the Pink Un one does where the ''viewer'' can ask the reporter specific questions and get instant feedback. Apart from occasional ''dongle'' issues this service was always faster than the likes of Soccer Saturday and I always knew who had scored before Jeff Stelling would cross to Carrow Road with a "Whats happened?"It would be a sad loss to mine and many exciled fans Saturday afternoon, I suppose you could try to send text updates via twitter but as I stated, part of its greatness was the interaction.

I don''t see what is so wrong with it? Do they think it''ll hit attendances or TV viewing figures?I can hardly see fans passing up the oppertunity to visit a game if they can, or watch one, just to follow live commentry updates. If they have a problem with it, i should imagine the "authorities" will be taking this up with the BBC and their live text updates? It seems no more than a handy service, and, unless i''m missing something, there doesn''t seem to be some sort of loophole that Archant is exploiting to air coverage of games? Merely supporting those with interests afar, and as a consquence will more likely than anything else enhance those interests, and improve the probability of the footballing world profiting from it.The "authorities", be they the Football League or FA, again just go on to further prove that they are run by daft and incompetent oafs of the highest order.I weep for football in this country.

They see someone else coming up with a good idea that they hadn''t thought of and automatically ban it. Makes me sick.

Awful news. This is hot on the heels of something I read yesterday; Theres a website I use that has a Premier League ticker (Upcoming fixtures for each team - Good for Fantasy Football). The Premier league had it removed as it violated their legal rights...http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2010/04/16/the-season-ticker-is-down/Echo the sentiments on the thread, yet another ridiculous decision against the fans.
This is an utter outrage..many fans not just NCFC rely on the live txt service. I for one cannot get Radio Norrfik in the house also its been blocked online(the game anyway) and love the live txt and chat on a match day..this is just the FA/Football league interbloodyfearing yet again!!!!

We''re pretty peeved here too, as Pete said.Obviously there''s the selfish side that I wouldn''t get to see and share so many City games! But also it seems to be a draconian response from Data Co - who are owned by PA and control the licencing rights for the Premier and Football League - because the don''t really have an up to date licence covering live text commentary on the internet. So they''re just banning it instead. No one wins, we all lose. And it''s not just here - there are plenty of other papers across the country who do something similar for their teams. Anyway, rest assured we will try and sort something in time for the new season - be it what we did last season, or as close to that as we can get.In the meantime, we may as well make some noise about it.

It is a measure of how far ''football'' is bending over and happily taking it from the money men. More and more the game is having to dance to the tune and pander to the whims of the ''happy clappies'' as well. It is a measure of how desperate fans are that they will sit through the text coverage as a enfoced substitiute for being at the game.If there is a positive then I see echos of the old BBC teleprinter when watching the text service. I see echos of being round my mates house way back when his dad used to tune into the police radio to hear the score at night games at Carrow Road (they would always put the score out) - when I hear of a bloke i knew as a kid who now lives in Devon. His nephew puts the phone next to the radio in Norfolk and Frank listens to it in Devon. He has to redial at halftime to get the free phone call thing. It shouldn''t have to be this way but if it brings out the inginuity and ''never say die'' attitude of fans then something of the old spirit of football lives on.

The funny thing is that I''m actually moving back to Norwich in 6 days, and so this will be less of an issue for me this coming season, but as Radio Snorefolk is also cut-off before a game I came to rely upon this service last year and really enjoyed using it.  My missus used to find it odd enough that I''d leap up cheering whilst watching Soccer Saturday - she came to think I was a complete and utter loony for doing the same when seeing the words GOAL CITY appear on a little box on my laptop!Thank you Michael and Pete for clarifying the situation, as I''d only seen snippets on your Twitter feeds, and I''m sure we''re in good hands with your good selves trying to sort it for us.

Looks like us exiles will be relying on the "unoffical" match thread for latest news and for those with Canary Player to regularly update the threads with how players are doing and who scored / got booked / sent-off / substituted as and when.  I can see an "official" match thread as being the replacement model that Archant will work on!

Very sad to hear this news, The Pink live text service for Norwich games, is first class, The best online coverage of a Norwich City game. Pete, Michael, Paddy, Johnny Readhead and the crew are great to follow the game with, and It will be a big loss.I''m at home games, but use the service for every away game, I have the text service on the PC, Radio Norfolk commentary on the radio, and Soccer Saturday on the Tv with no volume on the tele, Its the perfect way to follow football if your not at a game.Best wishes in getting an alternative sorted Pete, really hope you can [;)]

Loved the service last season. I''m in Glasgow & the Radio Norfolk commentary cuts off before the game starts, so the text service kept me bang up to date on matchdays. The hit & miss of whether your texts got published/ answered added to the fun of it all. Hope you can work this all out - an ''official'' service just wouldn''t be the same.

Yet another step in the corporate takeover of football, and another slap in the face for the fan who cannot get to see his or her side. I''m fortunate enough to get to a lot of games, and am in the coverage area for Radio Norfolk, but I know that many people rely on the text feed. This really must be opposed as strongly as possible and I''m sure that all the posters on here would back a campaign.

Is there now way we could take it away from the Pink un and do it Pirate? wink wink
There are several ways and no doubt some enterprising soul will take advantage and fill the gap should the text service cease to be.So the authorities will go from a legit company running it (who they could probably have negotiated a licence fee from) to having any spotty herbert clever enough to understand internet techy stuff running it. If they do it right they could be virtually untraceable and if not, untouchable. They might have adware and porn banners on their site, maximising their revenue. I despair of the football authorities.

You''d expect them useless bureaucratic tosspieces at the FA to focus on more pressing matters like the complete and utter circus which is our national team, instead they pick on a live text match feed which keeps many fans in touch internationally.

The Pinkun live text update keeps me up to date with City games since I live in Midlands and only make just over half a dozen or so games per season. Suppose that leaves me with the shite BBC version, what a bunch of Nazi''s.
