City leaving Carrow Road

Recommended Posts

It should be obvious to anyone that City are moving out of Carrow Road, they haven''t played there for months and Carrow Road has even been left out of the training week. They are lining it up for a sale that''s why there''s all those extra seats so as to posh it up a bit before it goes on the market. Then it''s either Dereham or Kings Lynn for us.Sky had an exclusive yesterday about the ground being sold and used for speedway once the club had moved out (it would mean the bikes going round the outside of the ground though). It just goes to show the lack of ambition the board has and how they are more interested in land than they are in football. We need a hinvestor now.

I''ve heard the board have been mighty impressed with the MK Franchise model and are thinking of doing the same -

We''re moving to Chelmsford a reasonably sized City not far from the big smoke and will be changing our name to CHELMSFORD CANARIES. A 50,000 capacity stadium will be built near to Chelmsford train station. Season ticket holders will be offered 50% discounts from all stations to Chelmsford. It is hoped that our large support combined with support from the big smoke and outer suberbs will transfer the club onto a higher level and hopefully one of the best in Europe.

Existing Chelmsford club, Chelmsford City have been offered the use of a much reduced Carrow Road. All the existing restaurants and function areas will remain while the Jarold Stand will be turned into a permanant fun fair. The ticket office will remain as a Norwich branch for the Chelmsford Canaries so fans can purchase tickets. The club shop will do the same!

It was an idea that was looked at seriously several times when the Club was not doing well and is still a serious option for a different reason. The land at the back of Tesco at Harford Bridges is the prefered option being the site of a previous land fill. The site is close to the Southern bypass and also the Railway line and is available for sale at a reasonable price if planning permission is granted.

It is a better option than putting a second tier on the City Stand and is probably the quickest way to increase the capacity of the club to the 35,000 plus that the Chairman believes is necessary for a club to maintain a position in the Premier League.

Interesting....any idea whether they think sale of CR and adjacent land will cover the cost of the new stadium?  Dependent on economic recovery perhaps?

Being serious now, messrs Bowket and Mcnally said they had looked at the possibility of moving and said its not viable and rightly so!

Carrow Road could be expanded to over 40,000 if need be and is in the best place - walking distance from the City centre, not far from train station and not far from A47. Moving to a souless bowl on the A47 would kill the great atmosphere the club has at Carrow Road and logistically would cause more problems, particularly bussing fans from the train station and City centre!

Norwich City FC is a great club with a ground in the traditional heartland , lets not spoil that!

The value put on the land at Carrow Road was £20 million at the time and this obviously is not enough for a 35,000 plus stadium but then the plan was for a much smaller stadium. If the Club gets to the Premier League it follows that funding will  flow for a bigger stadium.

The alternative of expanding Carrow Road is not a satisfactory option due to the inferstructure of toilets (especially l,adies toilets), catering facilities, disabled access, fire exits, parking, police facilities and so on.

There is nothing particularly wonderful about Carrow Road and if you compare it with say the Seattle Seahawks Stadium in the USA it is a miserable, unhygenic, flee pit. How many posters on here realise that the only way to their seats for many old and infirm supporters (and we all get there one day) is via the lift used to take food up, and rubbish bins down, from the kitchens at Carrow?

Bollards. It''s a football ground not a hospital or hotel.

I''m sure that everyone (including women and our disabled friends) find the current ground much more welcoming than the Carrow Road of 20 years ago.

Talking ballocks Bobert!

The Seattle stadium may indeed be better but to call Carrow Road an unhygenic flee pit is about as wide of the mark as Fabio Capello being in charge of the England team!

I''ve been to probably 200 stadiums for Football, rugby, Ice Hockey, speedway, other sports and concerts and Carrow Road is better than the majority of them. For instance I''ve heard fans who normally sit elswhere comment on about how good the facilities are in the Barclay. Plus the fact it is our ground and in a great location in the City makes it special. Yes it may not be the best but the positives far outweigh the negatives!

You''ve obviously never had the pleasure of sitting in the Arthur Wait stand at Crystal Palace, the very dated stand that houses the away fans at Portakabin Road, ColU''s old ground Layer Road or indeed countless other grounds?

I agree that the current 1000 expansion of the ground in existing areas will put extra pressure and workload on the stands existing toilets, bars and refreshment areas, particulerly the ageing River end with its rather cramped concourse but at the end of the day most fans go to watch the football and will put up with it!

After the current work has been completed, any future possible expansion of Carow Road would entail one of more of - extending the Jarold stand round in front of the Hotel, an extra tier on the City stand, extra tier on the Jarold stand if possible and replacing the river end and Barclay stands with better and bigger versions!

These structures would include new facilities that would serve them and not any other area of Carrow Road!

Why compare Carrow Road with something that is bad? Why not compare it with something good as I do? The toilets at Carrow for the mass of supporters are not far off Cow Sheds with men peeing in toughs and insufficent hand basins or sit down toilets. The lack of lifts or moving stairways is a fire hazzard..... God help people fleeing down the stairways of the Upper Barclay, etc should there be a fire or terrorist bomb. Tell me how many people handled the pies before they were handed to you in a piece of paper? To say its all about football is not good enough. Its about entertainment in a happy, clean and safe environment.
