Korey Smith RB?

Recommended Posts

I mentioned a few weeks ago that I thought Korey could be a good right back, and I heard someone say he played there today?Did he do well? Could he possibly do a job there for us? I know it''s harder to tell as it was against Dereham, but he did track back alot down the right hand side last season, he''s got abit of pace, he''s good at passing.. Seems like a good full back I think. [:)]

He did really well at RB, was one of the most impressive of the 2nd half. Got forward well and made some good tackles. Was once beaten through his legs and was a lot more attacking than Martin or Spillane were last season at RB. Would be disappointed if hes only going to feature at RB as he had a great season in midfield and being so impactful going forward as well as tracking back seems to have been playing in his ideal position last season.

He captained the reserves playing RB so it''s not a new position to him and it showed yesterday as he was extremely assured in that position.. I know it was only Dereham, but he was up and down the flank and brought a lot more energy to the position than Martin. I''d probably go as far to say he was our best player yesterday.

I wouldn''t like to see him start the season at RB tho and I''m sure Lambert wouldn''t either! We all know the energy and aggression he brings to the side and you can''t take a player like that out of the centre of midfield

I think he could do really well at right back but it would be a huge waste if he was to play there.

Having read about his performance there yesterday maybe Lambert isn''t as daft as virtually everyone said he was for selling Spillane and getting in funds for strengthening other areas, especially if he''s had his eye on Korey playing there for a while.

I think Korey played there when we lost 4-2 at Chalton the day we got relegated, seem to remember he was the only one who came out with his reputation intact that day so he could play there if needed.

Charlton 4 - 2 Norwich CityNorwich:  Marshall, Otsemobor, Doherty, LeijerShackellSmithRussellClinganLappinLeeMooney.SubsNelson CuretonMcDonaldCarneyGow

Charlton 0 - 1 Norwich CityNorwich    * 21 Forster    * 03 Drury    * 05 Nelson    * 06 R Martin    * 12 Doherty    * 08 Hughes    * 15 Spillane    * 19 Lappin    * 20 Russell    * 16 C Martin    * 32 Johnson    * 13 Rudd    * 23 Rose    * 04 Gill    * 18 McVeigh    * 24 McNamee    * 11 Elliott    * 27 McDonald

God, our 2008-9 team was crap.

Korey played right midfield at Charlton, we had Otsemobor at right back :-(

I think we all had our head in our hands that day so who knows?!

I don''t think it''s fair to say that Korey Smith at RB would be a waste. If he was to play that position as a full back should, he would be responsible for stopping goals, setting them up, providing the team with an outlet, and using his stamina to great effect.

How is that a waste? He was immense last season but how many times was he shown to be immense because of his tracking back and stopping plays? If we''ve got a real talented midfield (with the signings we''ve made) then I think Smith at RB would be great. He would give so much down that right side, overlap lots, and give the right midfield ahead of him the confidence that if he messes up, Korey will clean up the mess.

A lot of us have wondered why we were signing so many midfielders? Perhaps Lambert has been wanting to play him there for a long time.
From the radio commentary I recall Smith starting at right midfield, but with Semi in classic amnesiac mode, it''s likely Smith played most of the game at right back anyway.
You ain''t wrong there, worst day in nearly 40 years of support for me. Went to the open day on the Sunday and felt even worse, remember sitting in the Jarrold that day feeling so angry that it was allowed to come to that.

We have a very crowded midfield now, and I think it would be unfair to leave Korey out of it.Definatley think he''d be a very good RB.

Yeah, Korey played right wing on that fatal day and was only one of a couple who gave a damn. Rightly so only one of a couple who were subject to applause at the end.Did Smith not play that role for the reserves? As it stands he makes the engine tick in the middle of the park with his hustling and bustling attitude. Who could you put in there to replace him if he moved to RB? Fox is said to not get stuck in alot, and it seems as if Surman is happiest out wide. I''d personally say give him a run at RB in either of the Newcastle/Everton friendlies to see how the midfield copes. I''m still personally shocked for Spillane''s reason to leave, Brentford''s ambition?

It seems initially to be a waste of his talent to put him in defence but in the attacking wing back mould it could work well. Especially given our overcrowded midfield.Either way we need to sort out RB because on the face of it it''s a serious weak spot with Spillane now gone. PL doesn''t seem that bothered about getting anyone else in either! So RMart/Korey it may have to be, with George as cover.

By all accounts Crofts is a similar sort of midfield player, getting in and around the opposition when on the ball.

Fox was played at the base of the diamond yesterday with Crofts in the Smith role on the right but against stronger opposition can we get away with Fox at the base? He''s a lightweight ball player who makes things tick but without the physical and defensive qualities of Russell.

I''m not saying he wouldn''t be any good there because I think he would be good and a lot better than Russel Martin.  I think though that you are forgetting that he has lots more than just an engine.  His energy is really good and he dosn''t stop niggling at a players heels but he is better than just that.  He is also technically very good.  His range of passing is superb and apart from Hoolahan I think he was our best passer last season.  I remember him putting lots of ball on to Holt''s head and neat little balls through to C.Martin.  I just think that if you put him at RB you lose all that passing game and losing a very technically gifted footballer.  His technical side went almost unoticed last season.

Why would it be a waste of talent?

If he proved to be really good at RB which I think would be more than possible then he''d have a good chance of having a top level career in a specialist position.

After last seasons terrific performances, it would indeed be a waste of talent if he isn''t in the team!
↲↲↲I don''t think anyone''s saying he shouldn''t be in the team, although he can''t be as assured of a place in midfield as he was last season. But his attributes are his energy, passing and tenacity. These are best utilised in midfield. But i entirely agree that he could turn this to a rb role too. And his pace will help there too. Just have to make sure he can put in a good cross.

I said to my girlfriend whilst watching the Dereham game Saturday: "he will play in the Premier League one day." Hopefully for Norwich.

He is a brilliant central midfielder, and I would hope to see him play there, but playing some games at right-back will not harm his development either. I remember a certain S.Gerrard did a similar thing in his young days at Liverpool...

If Lambert''s thinking of changing formation to the "modern" 4-5-1 / 4-3-3 type thing, then we need some seriously energetic, dynamic full-backs (think Dani Alves, Sergio Ramos, Maicon et al). It means that the midfield can tuck in a still provide an attacking threat down the wing. I think Korey could be perfect for that position, and I''m starting to hope that Lambert''s thinking the same...

What a lovely sentiment. How i''ve missed the domestic football season and all such banter that comes with it. NOT.What''s that based on anyway? His world cup performance where he and every other member of the squad (and the manager) were awful?
