My point, morty, was not about the overall economy, it was about people already receiving welfare in some for using that money to buy tickets.

I''d be disappointed to find out money I pay into taxes goes to welfare homes who use it for entertainment, especially something as costly as attending footy matches.

We''d all be better off if those people used the money they are given in an appropriate, necessary manner and stretched it as much as possible, not on novelties, holidays, or dinners out. Actually I don''t blame Labour either. When they came in the country demanded growth and rapid growth to get us out of it. They gave us that.

The problem is what goes up can come down, and can come down just as far as it went up and just as fast if not faster. Instead of getting to a better situation slowly and steadily so that it would be harder to fall so quickly we decided to run at it - we tripped and now we are on our faces.

It''s amazing how people hold the idea those on benefits are having a whale of a time with lot''s of money.  Working in the benefit system you realise the vast majority want to get out of the situation they are in. If someone chooses to go to a match once a month, saving money from their benfit and going without something else then good on them.

The Tories need to get nasty because we have been spending almost 500 million pounds a day more than we get in tax revenues over the past year. It''s a shame that Labour never operate to a balanced budget, because if they did we would not have a 160 Billion pound deficit this year. The Tories had to fix the mess after the last trip to the IMF by Denis Healey in the 70s and now we have gone full circle. Welfare and spending has to be cut and about time too and with a minimum of tax rises, to give people incentive to go to work rather than spongeing off of fellow taxpayers. Welfare should be there as a safety net, and not as a way of feather-bedding people that don''t want to work. If people are buying football-tickets on welfare then IMO they are getting too much.  Get ''nasty'' you Tories !!

Trust me on this,under this Tory government (it,s not really a coalition] we will end up with five million unemployed and a massive youth unemployment problem.The time to cut back on public spending is not now when we have a small fragile recovery underway.The economy will start contracting,social costs will rise and we will end up in a downward spiral. The Tories are using this deficit as an excuse to savage the public sector,we are not Canada,and trying to copy their austerity model will end in tears.Is public spending too high ? yes it is. but now is not the time.Growth and even a little bit of inflation is the pragmatic way to reduce the deficit.As long as Britain is growing it,s GDP the credit ratings agencies will be happy.We are not Spain,Greece or Ireland,our debt is secured in a much different way meaning much less immediate pressure to meet payments.

Last night I got together with a couple of my best mates to play a spot of FIFA on the Xbox. I joked that we could all jack in our jobs, get a council flat and then spend all day everyday gaming whilst drinking and getting stoned. The problem is not neccesarily with credit ratings as such, but with the country having to pay compound interest on the debts it owes.  This, obviously, will erode the amount of money available to the government year on year.  Should we wait until we have to pay 10 % of the tax raised on servicing our debt ?

The first two weeks were like a holiday, the second two weeks were a bit boring but the last two weeks were the worst two weeks of my life.

No purpose, no energy, not knowing what to do or where to go.

Absolute rubbish. If the spending deficit is not brought under control pretty quickly the amount of money the govt HAS to spend on financing it''s debt will grow and grow, bear in mind that this is just paying the interest on govt borrowing, not clearing the debt which is currently rising at a rate of £160 billion per YEAR and would double the amount of debt within 5 years.

The more the govt spends on interest payments the less it has to spend on health, education and welfare. And the interest payments are already £35 billion per year (about 7% of all govt spending) and with the current deficit rate of growth would be £70billion in 5 years time.

It''s not rocket science, just simple basic economics.
