Can Holt Make The Step Up To The Championship???

I think so, in the mould of Iwan Roberts.....maybe even has a bit more about him...........correct me if im wrong but Holt at Forest, only played for forest in League One didnt he???........I have faith in him to impress in the step up....maybe not as many goals....but we will see more from his overall play..........

he is a natural finisher and still will hassle the hell out of any defence .

same with martin ,hence why spurs are looking at him . both are going to be a real hand full next season .

Nice stats Big Bad John....thanks for sharing....quite a good record of players making the step up then..........in the old days the top flight clubs would regulary buy players from lower league clubs and stick them straight in the 1st team.....doesnt happen much now.......

What do others think???[/quote]I think he has the potential to be a handful for any centre back who isn''t up for a physical confrontation.  I also think he''ll struggle with his disciplinary record and I don''t think he''ll score as many goals as Chris Martin.  To be honest, I''d like to see us bring in a quick footed, pacy striker to give us another option as we could be a bit one-dimensional next season.

Actually most of the problem was when we had people capable of providing a half decent service we lacked the target man to do something with it.

We really lacked a consistant big man up front since Dean Ashton went - Dion Dublin was probably the best between him and Holt although by that point he played about a season with Huckerby and Croft.

The problem was that Croft and Huckerby were direct wingers and prefered to play passes into the box rather than crosses.

I disagree with MacNamee. From what I have seen of him this season he is more the out and out winger than Hoolahan and has a good delivery on him. He has looked really dangerous at times. He needs to be played on the left more though because having to cut inside to deliver a cross is always going to be easier to defend.

We need a right winger to complement MacNamee and this Green sounds like he could be the ticket as he has a little more physical presence.

As others have said, Holt has an eye for goal, not only did he take the last step up well he managed to score more league goals in less league appearences than his previous season in League 2. Add to that the fact that he has been carrying an injury since like Christmas!

For me its quite simple, FEED THE HOLT! Give him chances and he will score. The only issue with this is that we really do need a back up target man. It probably will have to be someone younger who is willing to bide their time.

You didn''t see the chipped goal from an accute angle against, was it Brighton at home, then?

I don''t think you can score as many goals as he has done in the last two seasons without being a good finnisher.

And for me what makes a striker a ''natural finisher'' is their ability to score goals out of nothing situations, to turn 50/50 chances into goals. The chipped goal I refer to is an example of that. There is enough evidence to suggest that he will score as many as Iwan ever did for us if not more. And lets not forget Iwan only ever scored around 16/17 a season and we worshipped him for it.

If Holt scores 20 I will be happy.

Also lets not forget that he is skillful. We are not talking about 30 goals of which most have been penalties, or freekicks or even goals scored with the use of blistering pace. A lot of his goals have required more skill and craft than that as well as in some occaisions grit and determination.

That''s why I think Beckford will get found out at a higher level and I am surprised prem teams are in for him. Holt has a lot more to his game.

But with any player there is the risk they won''t cut it, but with Holt at least you know it wont be through lack of trying.

Chicken - I did see that goal, I also saw him miss some real "sitters". I do not want this to turn into an arguement, I am a big Grant Holt fan, he leads by example, works his socks off, but The Championship will be a lot harder than League One. I think he may find goals hard to come by, but as I said nothing would make me happier to be totally and utterly wrong on this.....

For me Holt is an all round attacking footballer, he can tackle, take on players, good in the air, has physical presence and can finish. This makes him a superstar in League 1 and 2 but, for me, is maybe his downfall when it comes to a higher level: i.e he is an adequate jack of all trades but a master of none.

For example, Alan Lee is an out and out big forward, battering ram and good at it, hence why he has been a Championship footballer for the best part of the last decade. Holt has similar qualities but seems not to want to play soley the target man role, he plays like Rooney does in the sense he tracks back, runs at defenders and generally does everything, however Holt is obviously not world class at it. For me Holt will have to adapt his game to a more specialist role (i.e be the ''big man'' up front) as I doubt the Championship defenders will allow him to play the way he has done over the past two seasons in Leagues 2 and 1 while at Shrewsbury and Norwich.

I think that he may score an acceptable number of gaols, say 12, but better defences and a lack of pace will limit him.
