Points on the board

Recommended Posts

Something I''ve noticed in League 1 this year is the number of points needed to get into the top 6. In our Championship years, 75 was the accepted threshold, but Huddersfield are only 1 point short of that with 3 games still to play. We could have a situation where the top 6 all have 80 or more points, and 8 or 9 teams top 70. I think its a combination of a big gap between top & bottom but also comparatively few drawn games

Anyone else noticed this and had any thoughts?

Yeah I thought this too. Especially the gap between the top 7 or 8 teams and the rest.

No, and yes it is probably for the season you stated. I dont think 6th place team will have many more than 75 points come the end of the season. But there is no one really challenging for 6th now anyway.

I think there has been an acceptance from very early in the season that there is 6 or 7 who are head and shoulders above the rest in this division. When you consider the revenue of some of the bigger sides compared to average there it was always likely to be an uneven league. I think that only Swindon and to a lesser extent Milwall have broken this and Saints have really under achieved because of their poor start. Even with the 10 point deduction they should have made the play offs. Gate receipts at this level are absolutely critical because of the lack of money from other sources.

A few weeks ago I feared 90 points may not be enough to guarantee an automatic spot looking at Leeds and Co''s run in. Luckily they all bottled it allowing us to dance over the win line with our tongue stuck out. Strange league table though, I guess the difference between top and bottom half is far greater than most leagues.
