It''s pretty clear that Lambert (more by luck than judgement) stumbled upon the diamond - nothing wrong with that, you can never be sure when a certain combination of players is going to work, & he had the nous to see the potential & run with it. Trouble is, as we''re now finding out, it''s a highly tuned formation which needs exactly the right players for it to work. At the mo 2 of the main components are missing, so he has to experiment - & now is not the time to be doing it! But there''s no choice.

Yes he did stumble upon it but if I remember correctly not straight away. We won the first couple of matches under Lambert with this (I think)

McVeigh Smith Hughes Lappin

Holt Cureton

His big master stroke was adding Korey’s legs to the midfield and it worked a dream. I think the diamond came a few games later when he picked Hoolahan, Martin and Russell. But the thing to remember is we won with these players and scored quite a few goals. Of course we don''t have Holt and Cureton but the midfield are all available.

Lets assume Wes/Askou are still injured who would be in your starting 11, here''s my choice, don''t laugh.

Forster

Spillane - Whitbread - Nelson - Drury

Macnamee - Rusty - Smith - Lappin

Doc - Martin

Do Martin up front eh? Not sure Martin Clunes is available. Mind you, a fictional character would do better than Elliot.

my team

forster

martin doherty nelson drury

mcnamee smith russell lappin

martin mcdonald

There y''are, Nutty; how sad am I! You got me thinking about early season (seems years ago now), so I thought I''d have a look. I''m afraid I gave up after a while!Too much to digest yet, but some real surprises at just how unsettled the team was - & I''d completely forgotten Alnwick!Makes you wonder how we did so well ...

Indeed Ron! But that 5-2 defeat of Wycombe was achieved with this team: -

Alnwick; Otsemobor, Spillane, Askou, Drury; McVeigh, Smith, Hughes, Lappin; Cureton, Holt

Surely this one is as good :-

Forster; Martin, Doherty, Nelson, Drury, Smith, Hughes, Russell, Lappin, McDonald, Martin.

I know no Holt but there''s no Curo either[;)]
