Blurboy1980 36 Posted March 20, 2010 Delia Smith inspires Man Utd fansPETER WALSHLast updated: 14/03/2010 14:09:00 Delia Smith ManchesterUnited fans unhappy with the financial situation the American businesstycoon has left the club in have launched a green and gold protest atgames which is based on the colours of United''s predecessors NewtonHeath. The campaign has been gathering momentum over the pastfew weeks with thousands of supporters sporting the colours - which arenot too dissimilar to Norwich City''s green and yellow - in increasingnumbers.Beckham, who returned to Old Trafford as a player forthe first time this week since leaving the club, picked up a scarf atthe end of AC Milan''s 7-2 aggregate defeat in the UEFA Champion''sLeague match in what has been described as an “iconic” moment for theprotest. But it is another iconic figure, who lives a littlecloser to home, that has been used as a “recruiting agent” in the weeksprior to Beckham''s intervention.Duncan Drasdo, chief executiveof the Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST), which has organisedthe protests, has revealed that Delia Smith, celebrity chef and NorwichCity joint majority shareholder has been used to rouse United fans intojoining the protests.Delia famously took to the Carrow Roadpitch at half time during a Premiership clash with Manchester City in2005 to issue an impassioned “Let''s Be Avin You” rallying cry tosupporters'' in the club''s bid to beat the drop. And Mr Drasdosaid it is that image which has adorned a number of internet sites usedby fans of United to galvanise support for the protest movement.Hesaid: “One of the things we''ve seen on sites is that image of Deliashouting Let''s Be Having You. They''ve been using her as a recruitingagent for the campaign. It''s a fantastic image.”But it is notonly Delia who has been helping the campaign. The green and goldscarves are being produced up in the North west, but protesters hadconsidered turning to the Canaries'' club shop for traditional-typescarves when they were struggling to meet demand.Mr Drasdosaid: “People suggested going down to Norwich to see if we could buyany scarves up in bulk. The colours are slightly different but a lot ofpeople have made the connection.“When we started people thoughtwhat are all these Norwich City fans doing at Old Trafford. But it getspeople talking and gets it spreading like a virus on the internet.”Itis believed fans wearing the green and gold scarves at Wembley whereUnited met Aston Villa in the Carling Cup final last month, weretaunted by supporters'' of the Birmingham-based club with chants of “Areyou Norwich in disguise”.WE NEED TO START SELLING OUR SCARVES TO THEM TO MAKE SOME QUICK CASH FOR THE CLUB.
