Demise of the Pre match watering hole

Recommended Posts

Last home game i popped alone to my favourite pre match pub for a pint only to find the Cricketers Rest had closed.  This was a proper Norwich fans pub and I hope someone reopens it soon.  It got me thinking about other pre match pubs I have used over the last 30 odd years and how many we have lost.  In the late 70''s early 80''s i knocked off work at 12:00 on a saturday and popped along to the Coach & Horses opposite Debenhams Now a Pizz restaurant).  Then for while I drank in the |Cricketers Arms on City road whci was turned into some sort of office, as was the Pheasant Cock, my favourite ever city pub, especially as it looked tiny from the outside.  Anyone remember when Man U thought it would be a good idea to attack the pub, not realising how many it had in it.  I aslo used to drink in the Kingsway and occasionally the Clarence Harbour, even though it was reaklly an away fans haunt.  Finally I moved on to the Ferry Boatwhich was a great boozer until the new neighbours took exception to a bit of music being played.  My favourite day in the Ferry Boat was on a day against some team in blue.  I large group of scummers came down the opposite bank and gave it the big ''un.  Somebody managed to launch a glass to the far side with devastating effect.  Not Big and Not cleaver, but very, very funny.

What other favourite match day watering holes have we lost?

I used to drink in the Cricketers before the game for the last 4 years or so and know the landlord and lady personally...such a shame this has closed down and as you say a proper Norwich fan''s pub with pre-match beers and free BBQ. It just wasn''t the same the last home match!

I hope it re-opens too, not too far away from the ground and shared some good memories in there.

You might enjoy reading this thread in the non footy section all about pubs in Norwich closing which we used to use before footy.

Well actually I hail from Norfolk (Sprowston) but have spent the best part of 5 years in Luton, so class myself as an honoury Lutonian...

Lord of Luton??? What a title that is....

I''m the tall one with glasses they call Jez if you ever saw me in the Cricketers

Big Chief I remember it very well, coming from wisbech we had all the so called man utd hard men in the city for their one game a season in with the mob that attacked the pheasent cock and to see the look of horror on their faces when we opened the big side gates to let loose some 200 or so lads that where all up for it was somethink I will never forget.

The other pubs I remember well at the time was the bell before it was taken over and the pub right in the city centre that is now a McDonalds but for the life of me I cannot remember the name of it but a favourite with all the lads at the time.

Ever noticed how this system creates edits all of its own.  My relative was Lord Mayor of Luton.  I''ve tried to find the photo of him I had without success.  He looks a lot like Ghengis Khan.

All I would say is please do not drink in the Ketts, Coach & Horses, Kings Arms as I enjoy drinking in those pubs and you do seem like a bit of a Jonah![:)]

The demise of the Ferry boat was scandalous - a viable pub closed by newcomers from the other side of the river in the legoset riverside!

If they''d of seen the bigger picture they''d of rather kept the pub as it was cause that was better than the pikeys who camped out in the carpark for quite a while after the pub closed and now its goiing to be turned into a hostel!

I always say the Clarence Harbour could of been kept and the noddy houses still built in most of the back garden.

The Kingsway and pub just opposite were good pre match boozers although at times could be scary when some of the bigger clubs came to the City.

The Rosary has been good in the past and thats sadly gone but like some of the other pubs that used to be near the ground they don''t do a lot on non match days. Even some of the franchise outlets on riverside are struggling with Norweigan Blue shutting. I''m afraid that modern society doesn''t like socialising in pubs and bars as much with many people socialising more in front of computer screen than face to face. Before the advent of the internet in the past people were more into pubs and that combined with supermarkets selling booze dirt cheap (something which in my opinion should never be allowed!) while pubs have to kept prices high to survive.

I saw a similar thing in the late 40''s till the early 70''s when more and more people got TV''s which wiped out a lot of pubs then. Norwich had a pub for every day of the year in those days. I dread to think what it''ll be like in 40-59 years time!

The Land owners should be forced to either tidy it up or sell it on.  Have to say, after one match we all went for a drink and there were a couple of very drunk away fans, I tried to be polite and tell one they should have won and got a punch on the nose for my troubles! Fortunately they realised very quickly it was very much a home fans pub and legged it!  All very silly but I liked the pub all the same.

As you say the main problem is the price.£3 on average for a pint,or £4 for 4 pints from a supermarket!?The smoking ban really crippled the pubs as well, though the government won''t admit this.It is a shame that so many are shutting.

Did anyone else get into the Arkell pub yesterday? 200-300 Swindon fans...no Norwich... except others under cover like us?

Rough place rough beer but when needs must.

Nearly all of the pubs that have shut down were terrible dumps lacking in investment. I will only start to worry when pubs such as the Fat Cat, Coach & Horses, and Rushcutters go bust.

Oh, and the other one people have tried to name was the Jolly Molsters. Remember Spurs taking it apart the year they came up here when they were at the bottom of the old Division One and won 3-1. Crazy day particularly for us in the Kingsway opposite.

Btw the Rosary had closed but may have now reopened.

Not pubs but what about the old Silver Dollar and the Three C''s (Greasers cafe), and the 24 hr one (blokes name that slips my mind) on Yarmouth Road.

The cafe on Yarmouth Road was ''Mac''s Cafe'' run and owned (I think) by erstwhile Norwich legend Levi McCarthy, who I think was also a bouncer at the Orford Cellar.  Was a great place to go after the pubs shut - spent many happy hours in there after gigs at the UEA or St Andrews Hall.  The Three C''s rings a bell as well but where was it?

Thought this was going to be a ''backpackers hostel''?  Remember walking into the rear bar at the Ferryboat when it was packed out with West Ham.  Someone with a loud voice shouted''Oi you Norwich c--t!'' - turned round and it was a bloke who I used to be at school with.  Apparently he was a regular ICF member but still lived in Salhouse - had a great time with him and his mates who insisted on buying me beers and telling me some hair-raising stories about their nefarious activities.

BIC: Yes was March ''77. May have been the day a few poor fishermen along Riverside went for an enforced swim thanks to the spurs lads. They brought so many on the day they had the no-mans land spare pen in the Barclay and had some in our pen too. At least they were relegated despite their "we won''t go down" continuous chant that day. Fortunately we stayed up missing relagation by three points.

Lord Horn: 3 C''s was on Charing Cross (opposite Duke St) at start of St John Maddermarket Lane.

*relegation*

Levi''s 24 hr cafe, that was it. Nobody took any liberties in there. Yes, many an early morning trying to sober up with a fry up and a cup of tea.
