THERE''S growing evidence that footballers actually read and get quite annoyed and upset about what people write about them on internet message boards.

First Joe Kinnear slams the “morons” who, a renegade Forest fan''s website says, he claims are “pondlife who hide behind computer screens while living out their sad fantasy lives by shamelessly criticising those above them”. (Above them?)

Then Robbie Savage with this: “I look at myself and read what people say on the internet and some fans say ''get rid of me'' – which shows how fickle some people can be.”

So if you''re reading this online, and maybe thinking of posting something about one of the City players on the Pink ''Un message board or one of the other popular sites, think on…they have computers too. They''re reading it and you''re probably a moron or fickle.

The Man just hopes that Gary Holt hasn''t been reading the message boards lately, or reading this, which might make him read the boards, oh God, it''s a vicious circle of fickleness. Gary, mate, just ignore it, everything…er, has he gone? Good.

A quick scout of the morons and ingrates on City''s boards shows that a sinisterly mad bloke (or is it?) called 1st Wizard, who frequents the Pink ''Un board, has once again escaped from his hospital cell and found his way to the computer wing. I take your point Joe.

Meanwhile, there''s a porn download doing the rounds on the leading independent site (you know who you are) and someone apparently knows of an almost “nailed on” English striker we''re signing in January – after Friday night, let''s hope it''s not Marlon Harewood.

Mind you, we''ve heard all this before from these founts of all bulls**t…heard the one about John Hartson signing in the summer? Well he was apparently, until he remembered that Celtic could offer him about three times more money and Champions'' League football.

So to all you footballers out there, if you really must read what the morons have got to say about you, follow a few ground rules.

Know your subject…read the sites properly, get to know the morons from the 10 per cent of sensible posters with fully functioning brains, and ignore the morons – they''re really quite easy to spot.

He is highlighting those people who hide anonymously behind internet message boards to spout rubbish & make hideously offensive comments. First Wizard is more than happy to, as he sees it, "name and shame" those players/members of the board/management he depises (and if you think "despises" is too strong a word, check out his comments about Holty''s injury), so why shouldn''t he be put in the spotlight too?

Essentially this is what free speech is all about. I would defend anyone''s right to make derogatory comment on this messageboard if that''s what floats their boat, but at the same time you have to be prepared to take the flak that comes your way as a result.

The Man is exercising *his* right to free speech, not trying to censor yours. Just because his comments touch a nerve, doesn''t mean he doesn''t have the right to make them....

It''s pretty rich to say that he is trying to highlight people who "hide behind internet message boards" when he writes a column in the main Norwich City newspaper of the week and doesn''t even reveal his name!!

Taking 5 minutes I found several quotes from The Man''s column.  "Holt''s injury a blessing in disguise", "The Man not impressed with Helveg at right back.....When he''s pulled the green and yellow shirt on Helveg simply hasn''t done enough to justify selection." and when referring to the diamond..."The Man is not at all happy with Nigel Worthington''s favourite new hobby – turning an entertaining team playing attacking football into a boring and negative side playing the sort of football that would make Gary Megson proud."

I could very easily go on.  I would be prepared to bet that more Norwich players read the Pink''Un newspaper every week than come on here.  So why are we being highlighted for knocking players and management when he does exactly the same thing?  If he''s p***ed off with people who hide behind their nicknames on the net, why does he do it too?  I''m not ashamed of who I am.  I have met several posters in the flesh and would give them exactly the views and opinions as I do on here

If he cared to read these boards on a regular basis, he would find that over 90% of the threads and discussion on here is good, fun debate about Norwich City, not childish c**p you see on other forums.

It''s a web site for Norwich City fans, all of which we are.  I know The Man is a Norwich fan too but he shouldn''t be so spectacularly hypocritical and not expect some backlash

I find The Man''s latest column no more offensive than many of the posts on this forum. After all he''s as entitled to his opinion as much as anyone else. Opinion on virtually every player at the club is divided (Helveg, Holt, Drury, Svennson, Edworthy, Bentley are regular topics) and its quite amusing to see big sways in opinions arising from single performances. Players appear to heroes one week and villains the next while other posters are so entrenched in their views that a player can do no right or wrong. What I do say though, is that from reactions of fans home and away this forum is not an unrepresentative sample of Norwich support in general.

I wanna get back to the main jist of this thread and say that I agree with the ''Man In The Stands''. There are a lot of people on here who just spout off a hell of a lot of crap. People who just come up with different rumours or threads which do not have much point. But also there are people who use the boards to discuss valid points. This is a good place to discuss opinions on tactics, player performances etc. Sometimes it goes a bit far and i guess that is why 1st wizards name got mentioned. I cant believe people are getting this wound up about something so small though but maybe this message board is what some of these posters get up in the morning for??

Rather than getting bogged down in all this personal stuff we should all just remember the motto "he who lives by the sword dies by the sword". No, that''s not a death threat to anyone but it means that if you post inflamatory stuff you should expect some stuff in return. I think the Man raises an interesting point that it is easy to hide behind an imagined identity and come up with all sorts of rubbish which may not help the club or its players. But if you do that then you have to take some stick back. The only bit that smacks of hypocrisy is that the Man is himself an imaginary identity yet seems not to have realised the inherent double standard he/she/it applies.

If the players get upset by stuff they read on here then they shouldn''t buy a newspaper, listen to a radio phone in or read any other websites for fear of being offended. They get big money these days and much of this goes with the territory of being part of the biggest entertainment business in the world.

BTW I don''t always agree with 1st Wizard but much of his stuff is highly entertaining. And that''s why we (or at least I) visit this Board.
