Google Bot 3,929 Posted December 30, 2009 Just been watching some moments from Liverpools days with the Kop (Namely the last game played (Liverpool 0-1 Norwich)), it got me wondering what a ''Kop'' was. Then i found this page on wiki:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spion_Kop_(stadia)#KopsAnd to my horror Portman Road has a Kop!!!! Anyone know this? Is it true? Should we delete it from wikipedia?!Why isnt the Barclay classed as a Kop? We''re far more hardcore than them!! Is it because we have a greater percentage of employed attending matches maybe?!

Canary_on_the Trent 0 Posted December 30, 2009 No they don''t, a kop is a single tiered stand behind a goal where the loudest home fans are stationed.
pennywise 0 Posted December 30, 2009 didn`t it originate from the boer war or something ?
Branston Pickle 4,149 Posted December 30, 2009 I don''t think there is any absolute definition of a kop, I always had it as being a (larger) bank of terracing - plenty of grounds had/have them and it always rather annoyed me that Liverpool''s supporters (as usual) seemed to claim it as their own. I have to say that when I was a teenager in the mid 80''s I went to see the binners play more times than I care to remember (alternating home games with Norwich), as a fair bit of my family comes from south of the border. I''ve never once heard any talk of them having a ''kop''. They had their ''North Stand'' but that was only an equivalent of the Barclay, nothing more. I''d have thought it was merely being used as a ''generic'' term.
The Fish Seller 0 Posted December 30, 2009
didn`t it originate from the boer war or something ?
Well done mate it does. The battle of spioenkop (spy hill Afrikaans) was fought in the Boer War, bit of a mess really as was common practice for the rather amateurish Brit officers of the time. I once read a piece about the ''brave scousers'' atop said ''kop'' being commerorated by the football fans renaming a stand ''the kop'' but it was actually the Boer commandos who defended the hill (typical scousers eh?The Brits including a young Winston Churchill didn''t actually realise they''d won the battle and withdrew) but tbh it''s a widely adopted name predominantly simply used to name a steeply banked stand.(Spion kop is the Dutch variant spelling technically incorrect since we''re talking Boer war and Dutch afrikaans). Power Ranger Canary 0 Posted December 30, 2009 i think arsenal had the first "kop" could be wrong and if im correct it was the returning boer war troops when stoon on the steep banks behind the goals named them the spion kop after the boer war, could be wrong again.
