I cant think we would have been interested in him this time last season let alone this season. Perhaps he is a squad signing for tomorrow rather than for the immediate season?OTBC

First poster - are you sure that you weren''t told by a decorator from Southend, not a Director. Is he available to paint my ceiling?

Ayrton Twigge,

Please re-post to the football questions thread!!  Seriously though, you''re right it''s very rare that a player makes such a step-up in quality.  Can''t imagine this is even remotely accurate.

If it''s any help I''ve just looked at their (Southend) Forum, they have a poll entitled "Who is best forward ?"

poll results so far :-

Laurie Dudfield = 35%, Freddy Eastwood = 28%, Wayne Gray = 24%

And if you are not excited enough already one sample post :-

I can''t believe Eastwood has so many votes. Hopefully someone will offer us a ridiculous sum for him in the Premier$hite transfer window.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmm :

Right then. Southend fan here.

First of all, our manager has denied the story this morning.

About Freddy though. He was at West Ham as a youth where he was their top scorer for a couple of seasons. It think in his first season there he got something like 28 goals in 30 games. He got disillusioned at football and ended up out of the game for 8 months before joining Grays Athletic where he got 38 goals in 41 games. He had a trial at Charlton last year where he impressed in their reserves for a month, before this year he had a trial at Swindon where he played one game for their reserves and scored a hat trick in it. We snapped him up on loan before they could though as he wanted to stay local. He scored after 7.7 seconds against Swansea on his debut (the fastest debut goal in English history ever) and went on to get a hat trick against the team who at the time were top of the league. After a few more goals we signed him for a reputed £40,000 with a hefty sell on clause beating off competition from a fair number of other clubs including Scunthorpe, Colchester, Doncaster (who i know for a fact offered an incredible weekly wage to him) and supposedly 2 or 3 Championship clubs including QPR. He''s now got 9 goals in 12 starts in total for us.

So now you know who he is, and I''m certain you''ll hear a lot more about him in the future.

Good luck for the rest of the season.

Thanks for that Andy S.  He sounds a good prospect from what you''re saying.  I think some of our fans need to stop looking down their noses at players from the lower divisions, there aren''t enough young talented players coming through. Maybe some people are too young to remember that Ian Wright came from non-league football, so did Stuart Pearce and I''m sure there are others.  Good luck to you too for this season.

I had heard of him after seeing him score on Sky''s football league review, however now thanks to the helpful Mr Southend Man I know a lot more.

I am a tad annoyed by most peoples attitude in that if you haven''t heard of him he can''t be any good.  Our nine years in the wilderness has reinforced (in the light of Sky and then the poxy Champions League) the belief that football is all about Freddy Eastwoods and rubbish pitches and people who travel from Darlington to Plymouth to see their team get stuffed.

We need to be careful that we do not forget where we came from (in respect of the last nine years) and do not turn hugely arrogant like a Wolves or West Ham who think they are big clubs with a divine right to the Premiership.

You only don''t hear of these people because the Premier takes up 99% of the press, even when there are no games.

You will all be telling me soon that you don''t know:

...that G. Holt is Rochdale''s leading scorer

...that Gretna''s two strikers have about 40 goals between them this season

...that Darren Way has now played over 250 games for Yeovil

Being a Norwich fan is about having, passion, pride and knowledge. I do not want other fans to hate us, we can leave that to others.  Now you can''t have a constructive football discussion with and Ipswich fan can you?!

If I wanted to live in a bubble I would support West Ham - up the ''ammers, my old man''s a dustbin, etc, etc

Yup, everyone starts somewhere and a lot of people have different reasons for not starting the "normal" way.

Family reasons, education, personal etc.

A lot of players the looked "fantastic prospects" and are snapped up by the big guns slip through the leagues without ever making an impression.

This elitist attitude is what we''re trying to ask others to drop when concerned with Norwich City, so we should do the same in return.

Thanks weston canary, Nobby G and bananaman for perfectly summing up my thoughts as I read the first two pages of this thread. I found the attitude of some of the previous posters to be patronising and condescending. I''ve certainly heard of Freddie Eastwood and IMO those who come on this board and say "Who?" are actually just flaunting their own ignorance.

Now I''ve got no idea if Freddie Eastwood will sign for us in the Window, or whether he is good enough to make the step up, but I do know that there are a few rough diamonds playing in the lower leagues and I hope and expect that NCFC scouts are keeping tabs on them.

Oh, and by the way, how many people can put their hands on their hearts and say that they''d heard of Lee Marshall before we signed him from non league football for £15,000 before selling him a few years later for £600,000.

Thanks for saving my faith in this board.

I know it is a different world now but I remember when we signed all our players from obscurity...

Gunn, Culverhouse, Crook, Bowen, Drinkell, Biggins, Phelan, Bruce, Watson, Robins, Drury, Huckerby(!), etc, etc

The world of football has changed but I worry that the game is so short term and money driven but we cannot play that game. We cannot afford to buy the big names that may or may not keep us up.  I would love Dean Ashton to come here, but £3m for someone who has never played in our league.  Darren Bent for £3m - is he worth three Huckerbys, or nine Leons?

We are in this for a long time and not necessarily a good time*

* it should be noted that the good times are available and when they come along they should be respected and enjoyed.

Nobby G,

I am quite prepared to be conciliatory on this subject, and if all the "ifs" come to pass, and we finish up with a star striker, then I shall be as delighted as any.

My contribution to this debate was to report my findings in the Southend Forum.

If as you say you like to have faith in these Forums tell me how encouraged you are about these :-

He was saving my faith in THIS forum.

I have no idea if he is any good or not - the only point I was trying to make was that he might be good but that we would never know if we didn''t find out.

Granted if people haven''t heard of him he might not be any good but as we are seeing there are loads of players below the championship that people have never heard of due to the press infatuation with celebrity and the Premiership - and in our current cash situation it would be rude not to at least have a look.

I know it may shatter peoples illusions but I don''t think we can afford a 12th of a Drogba, a 6th of a Cisse or even a quarter of a Morientes.

For every Jon Stead there are undoubtedly numerous Drewe Broughtons lurking in the lower leagues but if you can unearth a rough diamond, etc, etc.  Dean Ashton would have cost us a couple of Leons 12 months ago and now he is worth three-eighths of a Morientes.

We all know not to believe fans website opinions of their own players - anyone visiting here would think the Captain of Denmark was rubbish and Danny Crow should be starting!!

He sounds a good prospect for perhaps 2 seasons time. If he is only 19, I would say he is a good buy even just to play in the reserves alongside the likes of Hendo and Jarvis for the moment. I''m always up for (local) deals having seen an article in the paper saying foreign players outnumbered British players for the first time ever in August.
We should buy him now and groom him for the higher leagues.
