Paul Lambert is a good judge of players

Recommended Posts

Paul Lambert will hopefully be aware now of the ''weak links'' in the team and be looking to replace the likes of Nelson come the January transfer window. Lets hope so because he has done very well so far and we need to maintain the promotion push!

thats a point the doc was almost told his time was up . we would have been in a muddle if the doc went and we would have been stuck with nelson . from what i have seen of nelson he simply is too slow to hadle a front man with any pace and clumsy .

Surely Lambert will be looking to improve our starting lineup?

Not the backup players who sit on the bench most games.

I have total confidence in Lambert to buy or sell who he thinks best and to get the best out of whatever players he has. yes we had a bad day at the office at Carlisle, we will have more but if we continue as we have done over the last 10 to 15 games we will not be far away. Nelson and Docherty cannot really play together, either or playing with Askou provide a better blend. This does show the importance of askou to us though, if he were to get injured for a lengthy spell it could spell serious problems for us. I would hope that Martin will oust Osemabor,

Russell Martin @ RB, Spillane to come in at CB when he''s fit again??? Spillane started CB in PL''s first game in charge so not a completely unimagineable prospect and only lost his place there through injury before his wee spell at RB.

You make it sound as though Lambert was given the thin end of the wedge when he took over from Gunn. Surely, the truth is that Gunn spent his limited budget on players pretty well, the main exception being Whaley but no manager gets it right all of the time. Lambert has acknowledged that he has a squad of very good players but of course there is always room for improvement and the need for managers to be judged upon the squad they put together not the one they inherit. Gunn was sacked after only one game with his own players but Lambert has shown both what a good manager he is and what a good squad Gunn did actually manage to assemble.

Great shout. Anyone know when he may be back? He may be the perfect partner for Askou as he can play with the ball on the floor. Something Nelson certainly cannot.

Spillane also hasn''t been very good at centre back when he''s played there - he''s looked a bit lightweight, positionally poor and error-prone - would rather see him at right-back where he is more effective and also gets forward much better than Otsemobor. I know Martin has arrived now but it''s good competition.

Yes - Gunn had put together a good squad - but the core of that was already here at the end of last season and available to Roeder.  Bless him but Bryans problem was not buying the jigsaw but putting it together.

For the Brighton game there were only 2 of gunns signings that started the game and two others on as a sub - compared to 6 of his new signings starting the season against Col U.  Theo, Nelson, Whaley, Gill and tudur-jones will not be regulars for for us again - that is half of "his" side.

Both Askou and Holt are decent signings at this level - Askou the undiscovered gem (jury still out whether for me whether is is good enough at a higher level) with Holt the cast iron success.  Askou and Smith did not even make the bench against Col U.

So surely the truth is that Gunn had the core of a decent side,  used a scatter gun(n) (sic) approach to his purchases the majority of which were not up to scratch and he compounded that  by being unable to create a tream from the parts of the jigsaw available for him.

Our success this season is purely down to team lambert and the attitude of the players wanting to respond to his ideas

From what I''ve heard recently from people I trust who have personally discussed this with both McNally and Lambert, both those gentlemen believe that Lambert got the thin edge of the wedge.  True the players were unfit and disorganised as well (apparently) but according to reports both men regard the Gunn squad as overloaded with poor and average players.

I was surprised by the derision expressed for Gunn''s squad.  Then again both Richard Balls in his column and Zipper above give very good arguments to support what I have been told which is that Lambert is regarded as having done the best he can with what is available to him.

What he said. Spot on as usual, Zipper. Now if you could only sort out your namesake.
