Dean Coneys boots 1,550 Posted October 11, 2009 Without doubt the 7-1 thrashing at the hands of Colchester precipitated change within the club. If we had drawn 1-1 then it is very likely Gunny would have stayed in post. Perhaps the wake up call was the best thing that could have happened to us. It seems to have been the turning point in fortunes and at long last, and tentatively, things are looking up for the first time in years. May the good times roll.... GJL Mid-Norfolk Canary 2,056 Posted October 11, 2009 I think Gunn would have been well capable of amassing enough defeats in the subsequent weeks to have cost him his job anyway, particularly as the new board seemed to have made their minds up on him at that stage already. And thank god they did, I would once again congratulate McNally and all those concerned (not.however Delia/Wynn-Jones,who would STILL have had ther heads in the sand) in identifying this and acting quickly enough whilst there was virtally a whole season remaining for a new manager. Jimbo_Jet_Set 0 Posted October 11, 2009 I''m not sure that Gunny had much of a future under McNally anyway but the 7-1 certainly helped to speed things along and provided the ammunition for the changeUnder Gunn this club was going nowhere fast and more worryingly was becoming more divided by the day. The best thing about this club at the moment is the fact that everyone from the chairman through to the fans seems to be pulling in the same direction. As this message board demonstrated at the time this was never going to happen with Gunn in charge.Lambert and co have given this club the fresh start it so desperately needed. Regardless of whether we get promoted this season or not I feel far more confident about the future than at any time since Worthy first took charge
Dean Coneys boots 1,550 Posted October 11, 2009 I agree that Gunny would have amassed more defeats....the point is that the 7-1 got it done quickly....had we endured much more we would not be 6th now
Dronny Canary 0 Posted October 11, 2009 From what McNally said the writing was already on the wall. It was only a matter of time. Having said that, the sooner the better if you''re going to make a change and the great majority of people would agree that its been for the better. Onwards and upwards! Yellow Hotrod 0 Posted October 11, 2009 I agree. I could never see Gunny seeing out the whole season and when he finally went we would probably all have agreed that he needed to go and should never have been given the job etc. The 1-7 thrashing therefore acted as a catalyst to this process and gave McNally all the excuses he needed to relieve Bryan of his post. You have to be confident now that this was the right thing to do. Still, I do feel bad for Gunny. Hopefully the new board will provide us with the steer we need and we can turn the corner with regards to some of the poor decisions that have been made up top that have landed us in such sticky situations and have resulted in the likes of Bryan Gunn being treated so poorly. pete_norw 0 Posted October 11, 2009 I made this point on another thread, remember the Wolves game last season, it was loseing to us that turned them around, It''s worked for us too by the looks of it, lets hope we contonue on the right road
Duffman 0 Posted October 12, 2009 It was the worst tasting medicine I have ever had but we are all the better for having endured that warm afternoon on August 8th 2009.I was going through my phone at the weekend and I totally forgot that I recorded BG''s interview after the game. I had also totally forgot about the comment that Norwich City prides itself on his stewarding. What a joke we had as a manager.

One Flew Over... 33 Posted October 12, 2009 It may also have helped us that our reputation was destroyed on the opening day. It was all over the press just how badly we were beaten, and this must have affected how other teams saw us. We were no longer a "huge ex-Championship scalp" to other teams in the division if Colchester could beat us 7-1 at home. That may be wearing off now with the recent hammerings of other teams. First Jedi 0 Posted October 12, 2009 As I''ve said before, Gunn being fired was always on the cards from the minute McNally was hired, and that the 7-1 defeat must''ve had McNally rubbing his hands in glee having the man he wanted beat the man he didn''t...
