Did anyone know this at the time? Sullivan and Norwich

Recommended Posts

I can''t remember really, but I was looking up Sullivan and churned this out..."Birmingham City recently won promotion to the Premiership after winning

a play-off against Norwich City. Sullivan reckons the elevation is

worth £16m to the club. The thought of losing the game – and the

potential pay-off – led Sullivan to do a bit of wheeler-dealing to

hedge his position. He got a friend, the fearless gambler Michael

Tabor, to take a £2m bet at evens on Norwich to win; the Football

League soon put a stop to that. So

Sullivan agreed with Norwich that the winner would give the loser £2m.

This was also blocked by the football authorities. In the end, Sullivan

arranged that the loser pocket all the gate money, worth about £400,000."He sounds ruthless, doesn''t like losing and would do his best for a football club. Obviously it probably won''t happen. Nevermind.

I remember the game money agreement and I think that has since become a standard agreement between whoever plays in the Play-Off Final

I didn''t know about the betting, but there were stories at the time that the loser of the play-off final would get all the gate money.
