serious and interesting question
We would probably still have been beaten because the players were simply not prepared anywhere near adequately.
How do you prepare players for a match ?  Not having a dig, just curious.

Isn''t that a large part of a manager''s job? To motivate them, let them know what their own individual jobs on the pitch are? Knowing exactly what you will be up against and as well as what I''ve already mentioned, pick a team and suitable tactics to deal with it too. Also to not contrive to pick a weak bench from a fairly strong-looking squad (for instance, no McVeigh, Askou and Hughes). Not to under-estimate the opposition and to remind the players in no uncertain terms that we are playing a professional team in a competitive match in front of 25,000 people. And if things do go wrong (we''re only human after all, mistakes do get made), to be able to encourage the team and change things to address the problems where possible. All these things Gunn and his team failed to do by quite a considerable margin yesterday and didn''t it show.

Why should the players need motivating in front of a full house making their debuts in the 1stgame of the season? Answet they shouldn''t, the manager needed to get the team and way they play drummed in their heads, but not to motivate them yesterday.
