Why is Worthy using the diamond then ?

Recommended Posts

Most of our forum don''t like it, and have explained in detail the technicalities against it, Holt has said publicly he is uncomfortable with the system and Francis appears also to have below par performances when it''s played.

So the question is, If you accept that Worthy knows what he''s doing, and of course he does, would he wantonly field a team with instructions to play in a manner that would result in bad performances?

The answer of course is NO, so what do you guess is his reason ?

After Francis'' storming start to the season and Safri playing well there''s no way he can drop either. And he''ll never drop Holt however inept his performances are. The diamond formation is the only way to play all three.

Let''s hope he ditches it soon.

Horses for courses, that''s what it is...

I reckon one more match (LFC away) with the diamond, then get ready for a 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 goal-fest against Portsmouth.  Get in there!

And as the great Jock Stein said...

summed up superbly pete

it is time to stuff the favouritism though and concentrate on playing a proper striker upfront with hucks and getting some proper passing going

if we have to suffer this diamond much more i might start taking some magazines to the match

if malky weren''t good enough ..................

Reason why worthy has bee using the diamond is because when he played the 4-4-2, the wingers (Jonsson/Mcveigh/Bentley) were all really ineffective and didn''t put in any crosses into the box.

The change in tactics allowed Bentley to be more of a threat (which is has been, albeit with no end product), and to accomadate Safri to play in the starting line-up. Everyone was quite happy to see us play this formation at Spurs, where it worked really well in the second half. Perhaps it is an away formation?? with 4-4-2 more suited to be played at home??

He uses it because it works - who was impressed with the game against Palace, when Palace played better attacking football for long spells AND we conceded a poor goal? Since then, Palace have got zero points, and we''ve got 3, against good opposition. Until we get another genuine quality goal scorer, it''s the best bet for getting points in most games. But I would like to see the return to 4-4-2 in most home games, now that the defence looks pretty well sorted, if we can get the 2 wide men to stay wide and put crosses in. So basically I agree with Robbo.
