John Hartson: very bad news

Recommended Posts
Bets wishes go out to a legendary football player and personality.. Very proud to have had him in a city shirt!! God luck John!
at the risk of sounding controversial, there was no one on this message board who would have said that 2 days ago.this is very sad news and no one deserves what he and his family must be going through right now, but please, he might have worn a city shirt but he was never a city-player as such, i know everyone wants to wish him well but he was hardly a norwich legend was he, which, if you didn''t know otherwise you would think so reading this message board.i have been reading the other threads on this subject and seeing some peoples comments because, if you dont know, i have a website selling norwich t-shirts and, listed as the sizes, for the past 2 years, are small, medium, large and hartson size, and i have been umming and ahhing since i heard the news whether or not to change the wording.what i read on some of the posts suprised me by the over reaction they received, one poster said his best wishes then said keep your chin up (both of them) and was immediately slated for that comment from someone, another person dared to say lets keep this to just one thread but then chastised from someone else for doing so.when he was here, by his own later admission, he was vastly overweight and unfit to play professional football, and at the time, was ridiculed by the majority of norwich fans for that reason, some of the same fans on here now lauding him as a norwich hero of sorts, so please when someone makes a comment like those above, dont have a pop at them, i am sure if john hartson himself ever read those jokes about his weight etc he was and still is a big enough man to take it and laugh about it and would never want anyone to stick up for him.of course, wish him well etc., but leave all the eulogies to the fans of the clubs he actualy played and cared for, west ham, celtic etc., and if you are interested, i will be reluctantly removing his name from the size chart today, as, even though i would imagine the man himself would see the funny side even now, i doubt some people will.*awaits onslaught........
Primary testicular cancer has one of the highest successful treatment rates, but unfortunately once it spreads the percentage of a positive outcome become lower.
That''s true, but he''s not beyond hope.  The cyclist Lance Armstrong (currently competing in the Tour de France) also had testicular cancer that spread to his brain and lungs.

Very best of luck to the guy. I''m sure he needs no reminder that if he beats this, he is one of the very lucky ones, but things have moved on hugely in the last few years. Cancer is not the killer it was, and at least he is young enough and fit enough to stand a decent chance of withstanding the ''cure'' (for a lot of older cancer patients, there is no cure, because the cure is basically to introduce checmicals/radiation into the body that would ordinarily kill the person - old people cannot withstand this, so there is no point in trying, and you could even cause significant harm just by trying).

Even at the weight and fitness he was whilst here, he still looked a cut above in terms of touch and awareness. Did he come on as a sub in the Derby once and help us turn round a deficit? Or is my memory playing tricks? Oh well, can''t remember.I really hope he can pull through.

Armstrong''s recovery was extraordinary-he was riddled with cancer and the treatment regime was, to say the very least, long and very harsh-if he had not been as fit as he had been, his body probably would not have tolerated it.

Treatments are harsh and the specialist said yesterday that JH''s would be "lengthy" -that indicates Chemo and Radiotherapy which is very, very hard work for any patient and makes you very ill and weak. However, it is a curative technique, so he has a chance and a damned good one I would think.

Changed the game.Best of luck John.

Good luck to John and his family and I hope you beat this dreadful disease.

Just looking on the beeb website and testicular cancer can normally be treated but just look at the stats for lung cancer-http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/medical_notes/3243673.stm

Really doesnt look good but as people have mentioned Lance Armstrong beat lung cancer and testicular cancer so hopefully the big man can aswell

A true hero of mine as a West Ham fan growing up in the 1990s it was Hartson and Kitson all the way. Also the oh so nearly hero of the piece when i had a season ticket at Wimbledon in 2000 - his goal in stoppage time of the last home game proved not to be enough. As a lad I talked to him a couple of times outside Selhurst Park after matches and he''s a great fella - still got a piece of string he used to tie up his boots which he threw to the crowd along with his shirt, socks, boots and pads at that last home game in 2000. I just hope he knows how huge a role he has played in some people''s football enjoyment. Not many players get Legend status in my book, but John Hartson is one of them. Get Well Soon big man

In my prayers. As are his family.Lost my dad to this $hit many years ago when I was 17. I know he and family must be very scared right now. My heart, thoughts, prayers and hope are with them.Suddenly football seems so insignificant.

Been away on business for the last couple of days and truly shocked to hear this. Testicular cancer has a really good survival rate if caught early. It usually presents at an earlier age (generally 16-25). Unfortunately in Johns case it has metastasised to other areas (in this case brain and lung). The prognosis is dire unfortunately.

I have read Lance Armstrongs biography and although he did have secondary lesions in his brain they were benign and not anywhere near as aggresive / catastrophically destructive as "mets". Although he has undergone surgery I would imagine this is to try to "buy" him and his family more time.

I trained in the medical world in the late 90`s and saw several very similar cases, unfortunately the end result was always bad. If I could offer any advice it is to younger guys to check their tackle out weekly for lumps bumps and anything abnormal (similar thing goes for girls to check their breast tissue out regularly). If you have any concerns get your GP to refer you for an ultrasound and / or biopsy ASAP.

I really hope I`m wrong on this one, but I fear the worst. Like the rest of you I hope for the best and will be saying a quick prayer for him and his family tonight.
