Whaley fee agreed!

Recommended Posts
If he really does have a bit of a gambling problem as suggested by the PNE fan then it''s a matter of simple psychology for Gunn & Co:

"Here, Whaley, I bet you £100 you can''t get 10 assists and at least 10 goals this season"
HA!

According to the PNE profile, Whaley is a right winger, but has also played left wing, as a striker and even as an attacking midfielder. Could prove very useful!

Dont count your chickens just yet, you know what Norwich are like we may offer him a petty wage and he may not come! Hopefully he does though... looks quite a good player.OTBC

This suggests we''ve agreed personal terms. Still, any hypothetical chance to knock the club can''t be missed now, can it?

How very exciting! - Terms agreed with player!:
Like all the other new recruits, my judgement shall be reserved until I actually see them play. The move could be the making of him, he''ll be out of his comfort zone at Preston and will have to try and make something of himself at a big club in a lower division.

I say we should still being in this Nielson fellow as well if he continues to impress in pre-season, because he''d be hungry for a place in the side and if Whaley goes off the boil Nielson (sp?) will be ready and waiting to nudge him out of the starting XI.
Apparently Nielson looked out of his depth in the first half against Dartford! Personally I think Gunn needs to ask himself "Is Neilson better than Luke Daley?".

If the answer is yes, then we need to be getting shot of Daley, if the answer is no...... then we shouldn''t be looking at Nielson. I rate Daley very highly personally.
I believe it is between McVeigh and Nielson for a contract, not Daley.
Thats not what I was trying to say, I am saying what is the point in signing Nielson if we are going to sign Whaley. All that is going to do is push Luke Daley back into oblivion. We don''t need three right wingers.

McVeigh has played on the left side of midfield for us in the friendlies, so McVeigh is irrelevant to this equation. I would personally take McVeigh as our second left winger, in order to prevent Pattison from having to go anywhere near the left wing at any stage of the season.

If I did have to choose between Nielson or McVeigh though, I would choose McVeigh. He is a former international with an abundane of skill, a shouter in the dressing room, and respected by the kids (including Spillane and Martin).

We have enough decent kids at the club already, if they were good enough to be given a pro deal in the first place, then they should be good enough as back up to the senior players.

As a less bias Preston Fan, I''ll try to tell it to you without the "we hate any player who leaves us" bias that you get a lot of the time.Whaley is a Jackal and Hyde type of player. When he has confidence, he looks quick, takes on people, can play left or right wing and has an eye for goal (and a terrific shot). When he lacks confidence he''s clumsy, has a terrible first touch, can''t get past shit, shoots like a rugby player.regardless of his confidence issues he fails at tracking back, so you must have a solid midfield to help out in that area.I''m not sad to see him go but I do think he will set your division alight. I just think his confidence issues and fear of tackling mean he''s never gonna make it in the Championship but will look amazing in Div1.If you fancy a striker, we have Hawley who will knock 20  in a season at your level :)

I sit next to a Barnsley season ticket holder at work, he says that Whaley only had one good game for them (against Sheffield United), he is knocked off the ball too easily and his crossing''s not great

In spite of this he seemed to think he could do a job in league 1 with a bit more beef and application.

Personally I think Gunn & co have made some promising signings so far and on the basis that the purse strings have been kept fairly tight up till now, I don''t think they would just chuck money at a player willy-nilly and am hopeful that the drop in level may help bring out the potential he obviously showed at an early age.[:)]

Thank you, a decent post. We were linked with Hawley several times when he was at Carlisle.. he hasn''t done much for you (correct me if I am wrong) ?

I do find it worrying that no fans from his previous clubs have anything massively good to say about him.  I really do fear its a case of the only person who would come for the money we are offering.
Trust me he is poor! I can''t imagine the last time he played well for us. He was poor on loan at Barnsley as well. He has played at right back when we''ve been desperate. There''s not a cat in hells chance he will play in centre midfield. Any sign of a physical battle and Whaley becomes a shirker, and will not be seen all game.
I''ve seen whaley play several times at deepdale and hes always looked good to me.... Whaleys problem at Preston is the fact no one has any faith in him if he signs for us it will be a great catch he would shine in league one

3 managers have never used him as a first team regular at Preston, and Simon Davey turned down the chance to keep him on loan at Barnsley longer. He''s had chance after chance. A drop down the league ladder might bring the best in him, but don''t expect too much. He may prove us wrong, like Chris Brown has probably proven a lot of your fans wrong.

"Whaley is well down the pecking order at Preston" so says the Sky report. But still good enough for NCFC, and for some fans to be almost delerious with excitement about signing. What was that about the club managing expectations? As the honoruable Arthur Whittle said on another thread - "where is your belief?" Why are you satisfied with this?

plus now we have a Preston fan talking down to us - "we have a spare striker, should get 20 goals AT YOUR LEVEL" Thanks Delia, now we have fans of nothing, rubbish teams like Preston lording it over us.

He''d have scored a lot more if he hadn''t suffered problems with his back. When we first signed him his performances were brilliant and he was one of the main reasons we stopped up that year.

Rubbish teams like Preston? Apart from two years ago when we had a really poor season, we have been to two Play Off Finals, two Play Off Semi Finals, and had two 7th place finishes in recent years. Granted we''ve never played in the Premiership but to call us rubbish is a bit unfair. Blackpool are rubbish lol.

And here we have the stereotypical English football fan, if he can''t put an aggressive tackle in, then he shouldn''t be playing professional football - no wonder the continent think we are backwards in our thinking.

So lets bring this discussion back to earth and I will give a balanced view. Whaley (pronounced Whale-y) isn''t a tackler, he isn''t someone who can sit in midfield and spray passes around (hence he''ll never be a central midfielder), he isn''t one of those types of players who wears his heart on his sleave and he isn''t Christiano Ronaldo, although what he is, is a direct attacking winger, who can deliver a quality cross, without the need to beat the full back (which is apt in Whaleys case) and has a true eye for goal. The lad is a confidence player, as are many and when he''s on a roll, he is a real talent, although, as with many Preston fans, our players don''t get much sympathy if they drop in form, confidence or work rate. Whaley could score 25 goals a season for us and yet there would be calls from certain people to drop him, if he was seen to be jumping out of a tackle (or lovingly known as ''shirking'' over here) - I think you might get the picture?

Sometimes, footballers just don''t fit in and Whaley could be seen as one of those players. He has never been a fans favourite and although I recognise his potential, I don''t believe he would progress whilst he is playing for us and this move could ignite his career.

Play him on the right wing, get him focused, allow him to build in confidence and don''t get back on his back if he makes a mistake and you will have a very effective player.

Whilst I''m here and in respect of Chris Brown, the reason why he is highly regarded over here is because he was the catalyst to keeping us in the division, 2 seasons ago. Once you accept that he isn''t going to score 20 goals a season, it then allows a person to recognise his true qualities and he has great technique, strength, mobility and is highly determined and hopefully he can win the battle against his on-going back problem, because he is a real player when fit and hence why we rate him.

I''d expect the fee to be higher then you think. Maybe around 500k? I hope you haven''t got any Casinos in your area. Whaley is a BIG gambler. Very glad that he is leaving us. Big time Charlie attitude, and only played well during one two month spell and that is it.
Every PNE fan is happy to get rid of him.But no, they must all be wrong, Whaley''s a fantastic signing despite his lazyness and ego and yet some of you are pronouncing his name as bloody WALL-E unintentionally.Otsemobor and Whaley, probably the laziest right hand side partnership in the league. Whaley isn''t gonna help out Otsemobor, and that''s gonna make the defense worse too.Terrible signing.
Oops
