Is "trial" our new loan?

Recommended Posts
Lol trial and loans are two completely different things..All trials is, is to see whether their any good before signing them so it can''t be the new "loan"
Lol, thanks for clearing that up.

At least we are trying to build a squad of our own players!!!!! Nothing wrong with trials......just like buying a car or getting a wife......you got to try a few before you decide on a keeper!!

I think people have to realize that its a new world in football.

A lot of clubs are letting their better players go just to save money.

The free agent market has never been better in the lower leagues, its all about wages.

With 7 subs its also very much a squad game, meaning its better to have a decent all round squad than spending all your money on one star player.

I think we a building a squad of our OWN players, some will work out, some won''t.

The fact we are not spending much on transfers fees means we arnt taking much of chance.

Some of the trialists might be offered limited deals such as 1 year deals or even pay for play deals.

Most we will pass on.

As I said a few weeks ago it makes perfect sense to have so many pre-season games so we can get to see some of these players in action.

Gunn & co can''t do right for doing wrong can they. OK so our manager is in his first job but he has an experienced team around him who are good at building squads and managing low budgets. They''re clearly working really hard using contacts and scouts to take a look at a group of free agents, attracting some potentially decent players with a combo of words and deeds. It''s old school homework based football. The antithesis of expensively propping up the wages of upper flight players while getting them fit or windowing their potential for teams who can afford their carefree attitude.

If all this effort yields even 2 or 3 good quality squad players on contracts, then I''m all for it. And here''s the armchair expert confession we should all be making: If I had to build a div 1 outfit by training and rotating a large group of triallists on the off season, keeping my ear to the ground for potentials and keeping them under my wing while our opponents come calling - I wouldn''t know where to begin. So fair play to those who are busting a nut to get it up and running and best of luck to them. Let''s hope we strike gold!

So NO in summary - trial is not the new loan! It''s a concerted attempt to do the opposite in very trying circumstances.

Loan signing last year. Trialists this??
A loan player is "sometimes" a half decent prospect put in someone elses shop window to attract a buyer... who has no sense of loyalty or responsibilty for his actions. As stated last year... a temp in the work place is simply there earning a quid. Odd that few of you sussed this likelihood out.

A trialist is a player who has failed elsewhere and is desperate to stay in the game. Often he will have "issues" in respect of attitude or injury problems which will rarely go away long term. A handful of games and a contract of sorts and he will revert to type. Many of our dubious last term loans are now trialists... showing that we are now picking over the bones of a carcase after other animals further up the food chain have walked by.

In effect... loanies equals lethargy.... trialists equal desperation. That just about sums up Delia Smith''s Norwich City nicely.

Fair point, maybe we''ll buy our trialists?!

There were over 500 players released out of contract at the end of June all looking for new clubs .

It makes sense to me to check out a few and see if they will improve our very depleted squad .

Many were young players like our Spurs trialists who according to reports on radio had cut one compleat youth team .

One of our last major trialists to sign up was a certain Marc Edworthy, after Wolves had passed up on the opportunity...One of our last major loans was Chris Killen.Ergo, Trials are very, very different to loans....

Trial is surely the equivalent of "try before you buy."What''s wrong with that?  Signing a player before you''ve seen what they can do is a crazy idea.  Did we all wait for our wedding night before consummating the relationship?  (Sorry, I know that''s chavtastic but it''s the most apt analogy I can think of.)
trialists can not play competitive matches!
Perhaps the rules are different in Scotland but I''m sure every week Jeff Stelling announces A Trialist has scored for some Scottish 3rd division side...
trialists can not play competitive matches!
I think that the idea is that once a triallist stakes their claim for a place they are given a contract which is why we are so busy trialling people now - in the off season. Don''t know what the actual law is on competitive matches but it shouldn''t be an issue once things settle down.

No I haven''t - I''ve heard some of Taking Back Sunday''s stuff in the past but I must admit I wasn''t too keen on them. Haven''t heard anything by Brand New though, so may have to check them out. Cheers for the info. Will have to tear myself away from the new albums from The Answering Machine and Idlewild first though...
