Kevin Bond - vaguely OT but...

Recommended Posts

.It’s always

interesting to read about what''s happening in the lives of former players.

The Guardian, May 16th, 2007:

Kevin Bond, sacked as Newcastle United assistant manager at the height

of last year''s furore over Panorama''s bung allegations, is suing the BBC for

libel, claiming the broadcaster had a "catastrophic effect" on his

career.

The Guardian, June 10th, 2009:

Kevin Bond yesterday dropped his libel claim against the BBC, six days before

his case against the Panorama programme Undercover: Football''s Dirty Secrets

was due to be heard at the high court. The BBC has not apologised, paid damages

or any of his legal fees.

Ouch. An expensive two years.

I do not know whether he was innocent or guilty, but when you are fighting an organisation with limitless ammounts of TV licence payers money behind it, I doubt that it would have been a fair fight anyway.

Having said that, without going into the facts of this particular action, the onus is always on the defendant (in this case the BBC) to justify their allegations.

The programe was suchan over hyped anti climax. there was absolutely nothing of substance presented at all.Not being a fan of Bond or Big Sam I was a bit disappointed. The case against Rednapp (top fella) failed because of a technicality with the search warrant I believe.Filth acting like munchkins again

The libel laws in this country are crazy - http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2009/jun/04/simon-singh-libel-british-chiropractic-association-bcaThe British Chiropractors Association sued a science writer - and won - because he wrote their claims to cure children with colic, ear infections, asthma, sleeping and feeding conditions, and prolonged crying were "bogus". I''m no doctor but how does spinal manipulation cure ear ache? They cowardly didn''t sue the paper who published his statement, but him personally and he now has a legal bill of over £100,000, before appeal.

Perhaps the paper just reported what someone else had said.  That''s what papers do.  As such, the paper was not libelling anyone except possibly the one they claimed made the statement, if he had not said what the paper reported.

As for spinal manipulation helping ear aches, there are all sorts of nerves connected to all sorts of places that run through the spine.
Are you telling me if you had an ear problem you''d choose to see a chiropractor before an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist? You might be interested in some of my special tonic that helps ward off infection, cure sleepnessless, problem skin, depression and baldness and makes you more attractive to the opposite sex. Only $75 dollars a go. Let me know.

Its the same with Sam Allerdyce too, kicked up a fuss, claimed he would sue and then nothing. Could it be that these guys dont want to have to explain themselves in court?

It''s equally possible that even for a wealthy individual, the cost of court action against an organisation with the resources of the BBC is too scary to contemplate.

It''s without a doubt that the BBC recorded plenty of stuff that wasn''t broadcast. If they couldn''t show it for legal reasons the only way it could get into the public domain is if the BBC were required to present it to a court as evidence - where you''re exempt from libel.

With that in the back of my mind I wouldn''t take the BBC to court.
According to the Daily Mail, more than 50 hours'' worth of unseen footage, much of it relating to other managers. Bond, of course, had started his legal action on the basis of stuff that was broadcast. Other people named in the programme chose not to start proceedings.
