How relegated teams fare in the third tier.

Recommended Posts

A list of all sides relegated from the 2nd tier since  2001/02 with 3rd tier season position the following year.

2001/02
Crewe - 2nd Promoted
Barnsley - 19th
Stockport - 14th

2002/03
Sheff Weds -16th
Brighton - Promoted (Playoffs 4th)
Grimsby - 21st (relegated)

03/04
Walsall - 14th
Bradford - 11th
MK dons - 20th

04/05
Gillingham - 14th
Forest - 7th
Rotherham - 20th

05/06
Crewe - 13th
Millwall - 10th
Brighton - 18th

06/07
Southend - 6th (Playoffs - failed)
Luton - 24th (Relegated)
Leeds - 5th (Playoffs - failed)

07/08
Leicester - 1st (Promoted)
Scunthorpe (Playoffs - yet to play)
Colchester -12th

So in the last 7 years of the 21 sides that have gone down, only 2 sides have gone back up automatically, 4 have reached the playoffs but only one has gone up that way (Scunthorpe may make it 2 this season) and two sides have been relegated. Luton aside, the last two seasons have seen an improvement in the how relegated sides have faired so maybe the gap is widening.

Interesting, especially to see so few teams have bounced straight back up and considering quite a few big clubs have been relegated to this league (sheff wed, forest, leeds..). Also interesting to see how many of them clubs have been or are in league 2 or bottom half league one clubs now..
I think he spent 800k on players (Tunchev) who could play in the Premier League and is attracting interest from spurs. I think thats all for fees. But obviously we will be paying high wages to some of the newcomers to make sure they picked us, also we have high earners who we''ve kept at the club, Howard, Oakley, etc who will be on very big wages. Signing on fees dropped a lot, to about 150k i think. Also, DJ campbell who has been on loan to Blackpool is on 16k p/w at our club (not sure if this amount is before or after our relegation from the championship), and Blackpool ONLY have been paying 30% of that whilst hes been there, and possibly kept them up..So to sum up, hardly anything on players really, although a lot for League One i guess, but a lot on wages - not many league one chairman would have kept the high earners like we have - but its paid off and they''ve made a massive impact this season.Hope that sums it up, and if anyone has anymore questions - i browse the forum quite a lot, so just ask..

You mention DJ Campbell has been on loan to B''pool,Waccolo, but just as a matter of interest how many loanees have you had IN?

My instinct is,not many. Tells its own story really.
GK: David Martin for a season, (5 other short term loanee keepers due to injuries)DEF: Jack Hobbs for the season, Same for Gilbert, Wayne Brown for 6 months.MID: Cleverley and Mark Davies for a few months each, and finally Astrit for a month to see if hes worth signing in pre-season.So at some points we had 5 in the team, but they all worked hard and wanted to be at the club, the ones who went back to their clubs several months ago all came back to watch our games when they could because they loved it here, and all Hobbs and Brown have been signed up for next season now. A couple of managers were critical of our use of the loan market and a few praised the way we used it, make your own mind up if thats a lot or not because you get amount of loanees in..

More than I''d thought,to be fair, but still a HELL of a lot less than we had.

It seems that Leicester''s were used sparingly, and they didn''t have the farcical situation where certain positions were covered by various loanees all season long.

Just think about it: Lee, McDonald, Curo (he will do O.K at that level), Martin & Daley.

That certainly is not a bad strike force, and with Lee and McDonald playing together as much as possible would give us a good chance of challenging for Play-Offs, nothing more.
