Should Gary Doherty be known as the Ginger Pele, or should Pele be known as the Brazilian Gray Doherty?

Recommended Posts

Edison Arantes Do Nascimento, better known as Pele, and Gary Doherty, known affectionately as the Ginger Pele, are both, in their own right, icons of the beautiful game. The question is, and we''ve all thought it, which is the greatest legend of all?

First and foremost, lets compare physical attributes starting with height, Pele is a dwarf like 5 ft 8 in, where as Gary Doherty 6 ft 1 in. However, what the Doc gains in height he appears to lose in speed, it is guesstimated that he can run the 100m in 12minutes, its common knowledge that Pele is quicker that this. The final physical attribute to compare, and apparently most important in the footballing world, is.... sexual performance. It is well documented by Pele''s association with a well known tablet, that he lacks in this department. Therefore the Doc, spuriously, takes the physical attributes comparison 2-1, and leads 0 - 1 in this fair comparison.

Let us move onto the footballing side of things. Its a common fact that all strikers are measured by goals, thats why Alex Notman was moved to right wing, in this department there is only one winner. Pele has scored over 1,000 goals for club and country, whereas the Doc weighs in with 24 goals for club and country. So by the narrowest of margins, 976 goals, Pele draws the comparison level, 1 -1.

However how can we forget Gary Doherty''s versatility, he is, along with Christopher Samba, one of the worlds most famous Centre Forward-Backs. From a young age, whenever you play football everyone wants to go up front, the Doc is no different and although considerably able in that department (see aforementioned point), Gary Doherty refuses and selflessly plays most he''s games at centre-back. I know what your thinking, the Doc currently play''s centre back for Norwich City, a team who have conceded 129 goals in two years under he''s leadership. But I argue, correctly, if you had: Marshall - Semmy - Pele - Leijer - Shackell, we would have been 4-0 down after 30minutes against Charlton on Sunday. Therefore, for he''s defensive ability alone, the Doc takes a 2-1 lead over Pele.

When your playing days are over, all footballers sit down and count the trophies they have won and this is the measure of their success. Just ask Jamie Cureton, because what ever Rodent said he is still the proud owner of the 2006/2007 championship golden boot, and that award isn''t for christmas, its for life. In this department Pele has an NASL championship, 3 world cups, multiple Brazilian premier league titles and was named the Athelete of the Century award by the international olympic commitee. Gary Doherty has the 2003/2004 Championship trophy, the UEFA under 18 championship and the Barry Butler memorial trophy. Its a tough comparison, and although Gary Doherty now has the potential to add the infamous league one and Johnstone paint trophy to he''s list I''m going to give this comparison to Pele, 2 - 2.

The final comparison is the total combined transfer fees collected throughout the career. Why should I decide which of these two icons is the best, as Glenn Roeder said, we''re only fans, we know nothing, so let take it at the face value at what clubs thought they were worth at the time. Let start with the Doc, who cost a combined £1.6million (Luton - Spurs £1million, Spurs - Norwich City £600,000), Where as Pele''s combined transfer fees £0 (Santos - New York Cosmos Free Transfer).

So there you have it, after a fair comparison, and a well-structured argument it has been proven that Gary Doherty is better than Pele. FACT.
