Player contract clauses

Recommended Posts

I''m no expert on the contract a player receives from a club. Is it standard practice for there to be a clause which states their wage goes down should the club drop a division??

I know they tend to have promotion increase clauses.

There are model contracts but clauses are negotiable.  Most clubs these days will try and impose a clause which states that the contract is renegotiable in the event of relegation.  In effect it is pretty meaningless because if the contract is no longer valid because the terms are changing - ie, salary - it gives the player the option to go somewhere else.  You are in effect creating a new contract which they don''t have to agree to - and, if they don''t - off they go if they can.

I did read in our promotion season that all the players had sliding scale contracts, so they get more in the Prem and less in the Champ. I''m not sure this extended to league one though.

I just wondered as for some clubs the thought of relegation is not even a consideration, but maybe Arsenal and Chelsea players still have these clauses?? I would like to think that any "prudently run" football club would look at every eventuality If players want rewards for success they surely have to accept punishment ofr failure?
