means nothing now does it? we are down unless Barnsley (or Plymouth big time) don''t slip up....Prefer them to take the 10 point hit next year, where it might benefit us.

For those who don''t know - the points are applied at the end of the season. If Southampton stay up by their own means, then the 10 points will be deducted this season and they will be relegated.

However, if they are relegated, then they will start next season on -10 points, so the incentive is for them to stay up this season, and start next season on 0 points.

Presumably meaning that whoever then finishes in the third relegation spot, would then stay up.

This is best for us, because it means Southampton have to play to stay up, meaning a (hopefully) competitive match against Forest onthe last day, which could be decisive for us

But it only applies if they finish outside the bottom three. Otherwise it is carried over to next season in League One.

Don''t feel too sorry for them because according to some people on here it may not be the disaster some people imply and it may even lead to competent people running their club again and they can start looking upwards rather than downwards for a change.

They could well be in a better position than us in every way next season and in any case it’s just another example of a club slipping back to their natural level. Nothing to worry about.[:S]

this makes very little difference, we still have to finish above barnsley or forest (or any other team)

it just means that southampton have been taken out of the battle (to a large extent).  There are still some scenarios where it may make a difference but really how realistic is it for southampton to make up 4/5 points in 2 games?

Yes but as Denko says while it''s mathematically possible for them to finish outside the bottom three the incentive is still there.

I think they might still start with minus 10 next year. If their final points total without the deduction would have resulted in them being relegated then it will be deferred until next season becasue the administration was announced after the deadline. Stand to be corrected but fairly sure thats right.

THIS IS NOT GOOD NEWS FOR US!  We might well need Soton to beat Forest in the last game.  The incentive of not having a 10 point deduction next season is nothing like as strong (way too abstract for the average pro footballer to respond to) as the incentive of staying in this division.  They are down - nothing they do now will change that.  What fight they might have had has just been extinguished.  If i was on the Norwich board i''d be preparing the papers for objections and a potential legal challenge as we speak.  I have no doubt that the club''s response will be meek acceptance.  The only fair way to remove the likelihood of the likes of Forest gaining an unfair advantage is to have all of Soton''s results exponged from the record.  Our club should be preparing its objections on those grounds.

Southampton are relegated whatever happens, but if they climb out of the bottom 3 with wins against Burnley & Forest, and other results in their favour, the 10 points deduction would be applied this season, and they''d be starting with a clean sheet next season.

Think Southampton were doomed anyway to be honest but this is one less thing to worry about.. Do feel sorry for the supporters but they have been a poorly run club for some time. Wonder what Le-Tiss will have to say?

As others have said, I don''t think anyone has really given Southampton a chance of getting out of it anyway. It was always us, Forest or Barnsley for that third spot.

If we do go down, it might be good with Southampton already 10 points behind us. They don''t have any saleable assests but they DO have a good youth system
