Salopian 1 Posted March 8, 2009 From reports on yesterday''s game, it seems that we lost it in the midfield, where no-one played very well. There''s clearly little point in having so many (loan) strikers on the books if they have no service. Is it time to play Carney in place of Croft, if we can''t afford to play both? Is it time to give Pattison a game if Russell can''t be bothered?. As it is with Hoolahan playing further forward and Clingan not as consistent as before, there is little going forward creatively from the midfield. When we are relegated, we shall have to give thought to midfielders, assuming that Hoolahan and Clingan are off. Spillane may provide some power there, but you players seem a little lightweight. I fear that we shall struggle.
Jimbo_Jet_Set 0 Posted March 8, 2009 Why not change the formation? Surely we have nothing to lose. How about- 3-5-2 Nelson Leijer Doherty Shackell Croft Carney Clingan Pattison Hoolahan Cort I would suggest that the main advantage is that it means we don''t have to play Semmy! Rustys 1st Touch 0 Posted March 8, 2009 I would consider playing Hoolahan in the midfield with Clingan. Leon Britton plays there for Swansea and he''s the same type of player. At least he might be able to pick out a forward pass.I''d go with MarshallSmith Doherty Shackell BertrandCroft Clingan Hoolahan Gow Cort Mooney
ZLF 261 Posted March 8, 2009 A midfield that no longer protects, creates or cares needs changing. All our goal threats came from a set piece so a change is needed.Or 4 2 3 1? MarshallLeijer Doc SHacks Bertrand Clingan Lappin Croft Hoolahan Carney CortSubs ofNelson Mooney McDonald Gow Pattison/Daley That way Clingan and Lappin can take the ball off the central defence and be forced to play forward. Neither have pace so need to sit deep and provide some protection to the back four. When we are under pressure that bank of three work back and we out number them in midfield so hopefully out numbering them in midfield and also making us look more secure. All duties to get forward for clingan and Lappin are relieved. By having 4 players in front of them, and three of them with some pace, there should be a out pass on. With hoolahan and croft harder working than any of the central midfielders we should not suffer any more defensively and will hopefully pressurise further up the pitch than we have all season, ie defend from the front. Puts a lot of energy into the front line when we are going forward, although I would want to squeeze the opposition by playing quite narrow, otherwise it falls into 4-4-1-1 by default and that will not work.Once they tire we revitialise with subs.Just an idea.
