That makes a change Wiz, first we/you are accused of latent homosexuality by one poster then of seducing kids with humbugs by another. All this because we had the audacity to bemoan the loss of the word GAY from it''s original meaning. (well from our usage anyway). Just shows how far society has progressed doesn''t it!!
I''m loathe to respond to this as you all seem to be enjoying your memories so much but as I''m one of the posters you refer to I suppose I should.

I find it baffling that you could link the nonsense posted on this forum to any progression, or regression, in society as a whole. My comment about your ''latent homosexuality'' was clearly meant to be tongue in cheek (ooo-er [:|]) although you do seem to have a mild obsession with that particular sexual persuasion. You have no idea what I, or indeed DDD, contribute to society. Suggesting that what we post here somehow shows that society has regressed is a pretty pathetic argument as far as I''m concerned.

As for the meaning of the word gay, there''s nothing stopping you from using it in its ''original'' meaning if you so wish. That''s the beauty of language. Get enough people who all accept that a certain word means a certain thing and nobody can stop you using it in that way.

However there are many words that have changed meaning over the years. Maybe you rail against the fact that artificial no longer means ''full of artistic and or technical skill'', or that awful no longer means ''full of awe'' or that tell no longer means ''to count''? Or maybe you just concentrate on gay because.........erm.........you know [;)][;)][;)][;)]
Don''t think you were mentioned at all and the term society progressed was not aimed at any individual. As for the rest of your comments do you honestly think opinions are taken JUST by what is posted on here. If you do then you have a very inflated view of this site and your own importance within it.

Language is beautiful and if used correctly is wonderous. It does not matter wether it be Pratchett, Shakespear Wilde or Poe. You are right words do change considerably but Gay seems to have been changed totally(in my view).

Enough on this as there are much more important things to discuss, or do you have some more hangups you would like to air?

Considering I was the one who brought up ''latent homosexuality'' then I think I was mentioned. Of course I don''t believe that opinions are formed JUST by what''s posted here but if you react to two comments with "Just shows how far society has progressed doesn''t it!!" then you seem to overstating the importance of this site. As for inflating my importance, you''ll struggle to find someone here who takes themselves less seriously

There is no ''correct'' use, that was my whole point. Language continually evolves. The examples I gave you were of words that have changed totally, in some cases coming to mean the complete opposite of what they did originally. Certainly more that the change in meaning of the word ''gay''.
Hangups? I don''t really understand. Just responding to what you have posted which is surely the whole purpose of this place.

Thank you for that iluminating lecture on language and it''s uses.

I am pleased to note that you take these exchange of views in the same way, that I and no doubt, many others on here do.

Just one point if I now said that I thought someone was gay what would you immediately think?  Some of the older generation still think of it as it "used to be used". Like the word Golliwog recently pilloried in the media, those of us who collected Gollys from the jars did not think of them in a racial context because of our history of the use of our language.

We must I suppose move with the times and be more careful of what we say and how we say it.

Please I am neither a racialist or a homophobe just can''t stand Scum supporters[;)]

It''s an interesting point. If you were to say to me ''Wiz is gay'' (just as an example obviously [:D]) I would take it to mean that you thought he was homosexual. You may have meant that he was a happy, go lucky sort of chap (come on, you must have read some of his posts [;)]). Interestingly some of our even younger posters may have thought you meant he was useless or rubbish. I guess that was my whole point.

I haven''t got nearly enough time to get into the whole ''golliwog'' controversy. It''s not a word I''d use myself although I do have a vague recollection of seeing them on jam jars as a kid. All I would say is that I don''t think you can necessarily call someone a racist just because of the language that they use.

Nice chatting to you Butler, I''ve wasted so much time I can go home in a few minutes [:D]

It''s what''s behind what is said rather than the words as you so rightly say.

The emphasis on the meaning of words has changed recently although I''m not sure if the meanings weren''t always there. As a kid I used to enjoy Enid Blyton books and my favourite was The Magic Faraway Tree. The children were called Jo Bessie and Fanny and they had a cousin Dick. And there was a land that came to the top of the tree sometimes where Dame Slap had a school where she would smack the kids. When I brought the new editions to read to my grandchildren the names had been changed to Joe Beth and Frannie with cousin Rick! Now I would have thought that the the names Dick and Fanny had the same slang meanings back when I was a child too so it can only be more emphasis on it now. Dame Slap is now Dame Snap and she yells at the kids instead of smacking them.

The other Enid Blyton books I used to read were the Five Findouter mysteries. I remember the cheeky kid detective was only ever called "Fatty" and the blundering policeman[;)] was called Goon! I would expect these have been changed too.

And the programme when I was a kid was Captain Pugwash, with Master Bates & Seaman Staines, but when I was little those names were just that, minds were a lot more innocent back then for much longer.

pmsl aint that the truth, actually during the late 70''s to early 80''s there was some damn good music and tv programmes for kids.  I look back at some of the programmes from my childhood and look at what the kids view now and know why society is the way it is, hehehehe. [:D]

Maybe Captain Pugwash names weren''t written the way they were said, lol but it made a few people smile on here, and by god do we need that.

I think the kids need to be brainwashed with the magic roundabout, the wombles, and bagpuss lol along with classics like Monkee, Honk Kong Phoey etc.
I don''t think you dreamt it up WAY49. You were probably just exposed to the same urban myths that I was as a child."The

Captain Pugwash cartoon, which originally ran on the BBC between

1958 and 1967, is widely believed to have featured characters with

risqué maritime names such as Master Bates, Seaman Staines, and Roger

the Cabin Boy. In fact, the crew of the famous Black Pig ship included

sailors with no such names: present on board were Master Mate, Tom the

Cabin Boy, and Pirates Barnabas and Willy. (No character with the

designation of ''Seaman'' appeared in the show.) Series creator John Ryan

successfully won retractions and settlements from the Sunday

Correspondent and the Guardian after both newspapers claimed that the

show''s characters did indeed have smutty names, and that the BBC had

taken it off the air as a result. The Guardian''s statement ran as

follows: In the Young Guardian of September 13 [1991] we stated that the

Captain Pugwash cartoon series featured characters called Seaman

Staines and Master Bates, and for that reason the series had never been

repeated by the BBC. We accept that it is untrue that there ever were

any such characters. Furthermore, the series continues to be shown on

television and on video. We apologize to Mr. Ryan, the creator, writer

and artist of the Captain Pugwash films and books. We have agreed to

pay him damages and his legal costs."

Hi Arthur, have sent you a message on there, you can do what you like really, search for old mates, keep friends from afar up to date with what''s happening and post photos on there for them to see. You will probably get asked to join in with campaigns and things your mates are doing....good to see so many Pink Un posters on there!
