Bring back reserve football now

Recommended Posts

As title shows, bring it back, GR said he would scrap it as there was no decent teams and yet, there was no matches. So either arrange the matches or get back in the reserve league, which needs to be sorted in my eyes, the levels of competitive games are poor.

I have to admit that I was all for us dropping out of the reserve league we were in, as it was serving no point at all - but I didn''t realise we wouldn''t be playing next to no games at all.  We need players to be playing at least vaguely competitively in order to be match sharp, and up to speed enough to come into the first team squad if required.  They are far from getting that as things stand.  If it means returning to the league we were in, then fair enough.

100% agree! [Y]

I too thought it was a good idea, and I still do providing the reserves actually play games. If thats too hard or organise, the reserves league is the only way to go.

I could see what GR was thinking, but it hasn''t really worked.  If we''re not going to get games, then we have to get back in the league.  How else do we get players fitter, get the kids playing, blood in new signings, etc?

I understand what GR was saying about the standard or reserve football, but at least it''s a proper match build up and situation out on the pitch not just training. Just for fitness sake of the players not in the team. The games against teams like arsenal can still be arranged it''s not like there was a massive reserve fixture list. It also gives the kids more chances to play alongside and learn from more senior players, so there are still benefits to be gained even if the opposition is poor.

Is this a problem with reserve football throughout the football league or are we just in a unlucky location? With the Premier just concerned about their members, why can''t the Football League do the same by restructuring the regional leagues throughout the country? The reserve league available to us is insufficient with Gray''s and Stevenage reserves as competition.I hope the club address this problem and are in contact with the league to make reserve football competitive again.Personally I feel with this the development our younger prospects will be better equipped to develop their careers,it seems strange that none of our youngsters  have been taken on loan by Conf/league2 clubs.

There are a couple of problems. One is the cost of opening Carrow Road for a night game with lighting, stewards, security, cleaning, etc. This could be overcome to some extent by charging £5 admission to season ticket holders who currently pay nothing but even then on a crowd of 1,000 the Club would still make a loss. The other is the players who are available to play. The Manager generally wants to keep his first team squad fresh and free from injury for the weekend game so that is 16 players who cannot be chosen. Norwich does not have many more professional players than that on their books!

There is another option which is to build a stand at the Training Ground (I assume there is not one at the moment) to accomodate up to 1,000 spectators but there would also be the need to provide parking for up to 500 cars plus toilet facilities. I guess most on this Board would want the money spent on players tho.

I am fully in agreement with Reserve team football but Norwich would need more players and more facilities and more money to provide it.

I somewhat agree with the lack of players concern and Easton college might get the occasional call ,but we have players on our books who need games .Would Cort''s fitness be better for a couple of reserve run outs? These games would also give a chance to see trialists in competitive action .

they could always play the reserve games in the afternoons behind closed doors.. the floodlights wouldn`t be needed and neither the stewards,  all they`d have to pay for is the hot water for the showers and the officials,  its not as though the players have got anything else to do apart from go to the bookies or  watch the porn channel in there hotel rooms..if there was a couple of attractive fixtures like arsenal or ipswich these could be switched to the evening.. but i`m sure we could fix up regular games against colchester , cambridge, the binners, southend and even histon and kings lynn just to give the fringe players some sort of match fitness ?  [:D]

the reserve team games are in 99% of cases the ONLY regular football the 2nd choice keeper will get.. the outfield players can be loaned out or might get the odd run out off the bench or the odd start in the seniors on a saturday but the poor number 2 is needed at the club full time.. the lack of reserve games means a lack of match sharpness....

If Marshall suffered an injury or was suspended for a couple of games, Nelson hasn''t played since pre season.... not ideal preparation for him or the team...

something needs to be done.

If the cost is the issue, why don''t they play at Ridgeon league grounds and split proceeds with the club. It would be good all round and also forge closer links with the local communities.

just play the games at Carrow Road behind closed doors... many teams dont even allow fans to watch their reserve games.... why should we?

this would then allow us to trial any players against half decent opposition without risk of signing a duffer.
