Binky 0 Posted February 4, 2009 I know there were those who said (and still think) the Board should have gone for experience and that it showed no ambition etc etc – but think about it: with just a short gap to the transfer window (and less than 20 games left to play), the priority was ensuring relegation was avoided. And with very little money available either. Roeder had his contacts – but that didn’t stop him importing some rubbish he clearly had never seen play. Gunn has – eg Gow – or is accepting the word of his right hand men who have – eg Crook with Carney. The Board rightly felt the basic squad was too good for relegation and that a motivator would ensure safety. A Dowie, a Jewell or an Ince would have needed time to understand the whole club set up and importantly, the players. They would have been the bigger risk at this time. They might have been worse than Roeder on that score. Had it then gone pear-shaped paying them off could have been the straw that broke the financial camel’s back. Gunn & Co were cheap – mainly because they were prepared to accept short contracts – ALL CREDIT TO THEM FOR THAT – another reduced risk. All Gunn really had to do was show the players some respect and allow them to play to their strengths. That is what we are seeing unfolding before us now. Changes have been minor (it’s less disruptive to keep Fotheringham captain while players find themselves again) but expect more changes now that new signings are on board and he gains in confidence. We’re not out of the woods yet and we can still get relegated. But I would say that is now highly improbable rather than very probable. Who wouldn’t have taken the past 4 games instead of Roeder’s likely results for those games? The odds against relegation grow with each precious point achieved. As for the future, it may be that Gunn’s managerial career may not be long – but in which case we now have good potential candidates in Crook and Butterworth to step in if needed. However there is every chance that this triumvirate will work together and could usher in what could truly be a golden age for NCFC – and, with the benefit of hindsight, the Roeder era will be seen as one of our darkest periods but ultimately, a blessing in disguise. Doubters still do not need to get behind Gunn & Co – but they must get behind the team like never before. The team is certainly fighting the cause like it hardly ever did for Roeder. OTBC! O.T.B.C 0 Posted February 4, 2009 Good post. Agree. Always thoght since the appointment of Gunn that it was due to him having some hand in the transfer targets whislt GR was in charge, he knew the club, knew what the fans wanted and knew what the board wanted. But it will only be a good choice if he keeps us up.
