Mike Walker - why wasn't he offered the job?

Recommended Posts

“I am surprised to be honest,” said Walker, speaking from his home in Cyprus. “Bryan phoned me and told me about it. He has not been involved in the football side of things for a while, and it seems that after one game in charge, you''re made the manager.

“So I''m a little bit surprised, but these things happen at Norwich.”
Didn''t Colchester sack him while they were top of the league?
Yes we did.  And, may I say, a very great keeper for us - my own personal favourite among our many keepers. Also a bloody nice bloke.

His departure (as I prefer to call it) didn''t have anything to do with his on field activities.......................
Anyone think he sounded depressingly desperate?
To be fair to Mike, the weather has been pretty poor this summer in Cyprus, most of the fruit didn''t ripen, most of it bitter and the grapes were yellowy green and sour!

I met him after a match and we chatted for 15 minutes and have to say, he was one of the nicest guys you could ever meet - maybe his time has gone with Norwich City, but I won''t hear a word said against him!

Apparently he and Suzi don''t speak - at least they didn''t in 2004

Great and brave keeper for us at Colchester.  Record number of appearances for a Colchester keeper 451 - how sad I can remember that.[+o(]

I''m not going to remember him for being rung up and asked to comment on Gunny.

Well, would you leave the cumfort of an all year round sunshine place like Cyprus where you can sit by the pool every day of the year and including Christmas day, to come out of retirement and freeze for most of the year,? how ever it was in the Cyprus papers that he was on the short list

Completely agree Muddy, he was a genuinely nice guy who gave us some of our greatest ever footballing days. But we just can''t go back that way again. His legacy lives on though in our new management team.

Just for the record I totally agree, he was a great guy and manager, who could man-manage and be on the same level as the players but still had the players respect. Okay some might say the players were out on the sauce a bit too much but who wouldn''t swap that level of team spirit for what we have seen in past seasons?

Walkers been out of the game for years! he allso seems to think clubs will simply come and get him when he needs to actively be looking for work....

A legend though! but i woudlnt have him back as manager.... he''d probably wonder where Erik Fuglestadt and John Polston have gone!

jas :)

Absolutely right. Sitting in Cyprus feeling sorry for yourself is no preparation for a job, and his rather snide comments do him little credit. Having said that, he was brilliant first time round but disastrous the second mainly because he''d begun to believe his own publicity.

Obviously his time has gone, but it shows the affection people have that his name still comes up when there''s a vacancy.

The bit on the centenary vid after the Inter game where he turns away from camera, his voice beginning to crack, always cuts me up. [:''(]

Has he actually said he wants to get back into the game though?

Also, his second spell was only disasterous because the board wouldn''t back him. I think we must have only spent transfer money on one player during that 2 year spell, that being Iwan!

Craig Fleming being the other.... isn''t it funny how 2 of our greatest servents were signed by Walker?

He waved goodbye to the fans in the San siro and Wiz if you had been there and seen his body language then, you knew it was goodbye.

Should never have come back once he had gone.

Thoses little moments in time should always be left unsullied.
