The new manager

Recommended Posts

From comments made by Roger Munby, the manager will have to be "green and yellow" - this should rule out many of the leading contenders. If this is important, then it would favour Boothroyd, Gunny, Rioch and Robbins, and tend to preclude Ince, Calderwoods, and others. (If the Board considered an approach for Worthington, then it suggests that the Board are looking for a previous canary connection.)After that, the criteria seem to be:1) Able to inspire/ motivate players to give their all2) Wise team selection and tactics3) Able to spot potential in players in the youth, or on the fringe4) Able to lead a team - assistants, scouts, backroom people5) Have good contacts with other clubs6) Be respected and approachable, able to communicate with supporters, players, pressand (perhaps) not be in a job at the moment - we can''t afford to buy out a contract? On this basis, and remembering that a good manager will appoint good coaches/assistants who will help with assessment/ tactics and team selection, suggests that for a man without much experience as manager, 2,3 and even 4 above do not necessarily become a bar.So far we have considered the possibility of a duo, with the more experienced as manager, - Boothroyd and Malky? What of the other way round, - a manager with a more experienced Diractor of Football to guide him? This could favour Gunny, with one from Rioch, Brown, Stringer as advisor.

I would personally not be in favour of a Director of football situation. It leads to a massive lack of clarity around who is actually making the key decisions i.e team selction, targetted players etc such as the Wise/Keegan saga.

The last thing we need now is for the waters to be muddied. We need clear leadership and someone who has a solid understanding of where the club is heading. Also, would bringing someone in like Stringer/Rioch etc who have been out of the ''front line'' for a while be sensible?

agreed.. riochs been out of the game for what 7? 8 years? Stringer for over a Decade and Brown even longer! it would be madness to have someone so far detached from the mdern game come in.
