Binky 0 Posted January 20, 2009 In both 2006 and 2007, 43 pts would have guaranteed safety. In 2008 (rogue year?) it was 53 pts. With 29 pts so far and 18 games to go , what is the total needed? Assuming Charlton are down, it''s currently quite tight with just 7 pts currently separating 9 clubs. Even ignoring the possibility of Southampton falling into administration, it is probable that a lower points tally than last year (ie nearer 43 than 53pts) will ensure safety if any of these 9 clubs are at risk of filling the two remaining relegation slots. (Technically, if 53 pts are needed then only Wolves & Reading are currently safe!). Now being the optimist and predicting 6 points from the next two games (why not?), that would leave say 10 pts needed from the next 16 games (for 45 pts). If I am wrong about the Doncaster result and we draw, that would still give us the 43 pts. OK, so let''s assume we lose ALL the away games. (Nil Points - now that''s not going to happen is it? - even assuming we lose away to Charlton). Our 8 home games are: Bristol City; Burnley; Coventry; Cardiff; Plymouth; Sheffield Weds; Watford & Reading. A few banana skins there maybe but surely we will get 14 points - W4 D2 L2. as an absolute minimum. That would total 47 pts even assuming we only draw at Doncaster. A few clubs have a game in hand but all the clubs below us are still on the slide - where as we are on the up ( and I''m not just relying on the Barnsley match for that statement). I really can''t see us finishing on less than 50 pts now Roeder''s influence has gone. Have I missed something? (If my assumptions are right, it just shows how important it was to sack the manager and not leave it any longer. The compensation to pay him off may prove to be money well spent in the short - as well as the long -term).
Shifty Sid 0 Posted January 20, 2009 I agree with you. The win against Barnsley was the vital one - that put a bit more daylight between us and the bottom three and must have done wonders for the players confidence.
