Delia- The way it is and the truth.

Recommended Posts

Then

When Delia first took over at Carrow Road we needed her, there is no arguing the fact, at that exact time we needed her. We were 24 hours from adminstration, Club staff were being told that their jobs would be going and only one person (or Smith and Jones as a couple) stepped forward. It was the best news the Football Club could have had and things were revealed such as what a state the finances were in after the Chase regime. How the Club could not afford one owner to make all decisions take over again and that the Club would slowly move forward.

Now

The first thing that annoys me is that when we are doing well, ie the Worthy era, Delia is all over the papers, TV, available for interviews and sits with the crowd. When things are going bad, ie under Roeder, she is nowhere to be seen! We don''t hear from her, see her and the Club loses all publicity. If a new owner took over at Norwich, im pretty sure that they would question the state of the finances the Club has been left in. But would a new owner be able to take over, it seems we have regime that does not wish for anyone else to be involved and if they do such as the Turners, they are shown the door.

Future

We needed Delia and she certainly helped us but it''s knowing when to stand down and not souring the reign. Worthy hung on too long and didn''t want to let go, though now we know that meant getting £500,000! So what is Delia getting for hanging on? She either needs to start being more honest and open about the Club or the people who once respected her are going to turn against her.

Point taken!lol! Yes, the point is we deserve to be better informed on finances and it would be nice if she said that the managers situation is being monitored or at least acknowledged!
Delia didn''t step in and save the club for administration. That was Geoffrey Watling. He then sold the shares to her.
It was all the same deal, re-package it how you like but Delia was on board then whether it was behind or front of scenes.
No it isn''t. I am not defending Delia''s reign but if you speak to people at the Club they will tell you that.
So why, if the myth is true, was there absolutely NOTHING made public about that position at the time. There was nothing, nothing at all in the local media, radio, TV or national press that we were about to go bust or into adminsitration. When other clubs have reached a similar position they tend to open up and beg the local population to come and save them. Why did this NOT happen at Norwich?

My view on this is that either:

1. The financial position was not as absolutely life threatening as is always made out and / or

2. Smith wanted the club to deal ONLY with her so that she could effectively take control (I have heard  on a number of occasions that this may have been the resaon for the wall of silence in May 2006)

Mr Watling "saved" the club in that he stepped in to broker a deal which stopped the banks from calling in all the debt. It was theSmiths money which enabled the deal to be struck. Mr Watling should be seen as the man who saved the club in the short term but he could have done nothing without the Smiths money.

And despite clams by some on this thread we were 24 hours from going out of business. Chase had sold players and still the banks wanted  more.

So, if Smith had backed out of the deal at the last minute (and who could have blamed her), are you seriously suggesting that the first thing the people of Norwich and Norfolk would have known about this is to read the EEN billboards saying ....''NCFC closed down'' (or similar) and having been given (effectively) no opportunity to come forward and save the club?? This has not happend at other clubs in similar situation so why was the whole thing shrouded in such secrecy??

It was hardly a secret at the time. We had a chairman selling players without the manager knowing at silly knock down prices just to pay off the bank. The "24 hours" story was doing the rounds at the time and was most probably tinged with a bit of journalistic licence. The banks were calling in the money which would have taken us into administration very quickly. Maybe not 24 hours but in a very short time.

Watlings money was enough to stall the banks, it was the Smiths money and the structuring of the debt which safeguarded the club (Until now)
Delia didn''t step in and save the club for administration. That was Geoffrey Watling. He then sold the shares to her.
Once again the myth killers stoke rather than put out the myth. What Watling did was to stave off administration, it wasn''t a long term solution and it''s simple concept was to buy enough time for new investors to come in and do everything properly. Once it goes to administration there really is no controll over who buys the club really and Watling knew that as well as any other. So whilst MWJ AND Delia (that''s another myth,  that Delia smith is our majority share holder, no one ever seems to mention MWJ who is one half of the majority holding duo) may not have "saved" the club from the administrators as in beat them off the door step they did complete battle phase two which was to insure they did not return. My take on it is thus - Delia and MWJ did not step in at the 11th hour to save the emediate future of the club, that was Watling. However they did step in at the second 11th hour when the long term future of the club needed the security of wealthy owners.
