Time to scout the lower leagues...

Recommended Posts

...for new players?

Arguably our two best summer signings (Bell and Clingan) were playing in divisions below us last season. Their market is cheaper than searching around the Prem/Championship.

Plus I would say that lower league players would be more hungry to play and impress in the Championship, than Prem/Championship players, who for their own reasons, arent cutting it at their clubs.

There are some real gems to be found in the lower leagues (League 1/2), so why are we spending big bucks looking around the Premiership, incurring big agents fees, big wages, and bigger egos?

The answer may be experience, but do we now need experience, desire to play, or a good mix of the two?

Im sure agents fees in the top leagues are more than scouting lower leagues. And id fairly safely say the wages of players from bigger clubs will be more than stars in the lower leagues.

jamie ward of chseterfeild do not confess to know verry much about him but would appear to know where the bak of the net is for chesterfeild only 5ft5 and i know you will all say that ryan jarvis scored in that league so mabey the defences may not be great but only young so may well be worth a look for our scouts.

I agree we should look down in the lower divisions for hungry and ambitious talented players rather than paying top bucks for Prem failures.  I remember us building successful teams in the past that way - Micky Phelan from Burnley, Steve Bruce from Gillingham, Kevin Drinkell from Grimsby, David Williams from Bristol Rovers etc.  These guys were not household names when we got them (usually pretty cheap) but they wanted to play and progress in most cases so we got the best out of them and sold on at a profit.  A good scouting network and some hard bargaining is what we need.  A couple of teenage Prem squad members just wont give us the security we need over the coming months I fear.

Iriekpen could surely be yours.  I''m sure Mr Corcoran will have rung Norwich (and everyone else) after his player was stripped of the captaincy and told by the Manager: "You won''t play for this club again until hell freezes over, now **** off."

(The rest of it is too strong for a family news group).

I blame arrogant Managers myself.
